... Some of them are completely baffling such as the tale of "The Idol House of Astarte", which at first telling just HAS to be a rattling good ghost story. Our Miss Marple solves it, to thie surpise of those who don't know what a sharp minded old bird she is. My particular favourite of all ... Read review

Thirteen for the price of one

AdvantagesClassic Agatha

DisadvantagesToo short

"...I prefer Miss Marple to the more flamboyant Poirot, although both are uttely wonderful. For Miss Marple fans, this is a real treat. At a dinner party she attends, each guest is invited to come up with an "impossible" story. Some of them are completely baffling such as the tale of "The Idol House of Astarte", which at first telling just HAS to be a rattling good ghost story. Our Miss Marple solves it, to thie surpise of those who don't know what ..." Read review

13 Sparkling stories with Miss Marple to the fore

Advantages13 gems that you can leave midway but still have reached a finishing point

DisadvantagesIt leaves you wanting more

"...was interested so I read the first story. I was quite shocked at how much I enjoyed it and how rounded the story was. Christie has cleverly set the scene as a story telling at a dinner party and has thus got around the need for thirteen different starts and backgrounds and enables a diving into the facts straight away which gives every tale a crisp edge to it. I actually ended up reading the book at one sitting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ..." Read review

AdvantagesNot easy to guess the ending.

DisadvantagesHad to order it from the library.

"...marry and does not want the tainted reputation of her mother to haunt her. She also feels that her mother's name should be cleared especially in the llight of becoming a mother herself in the future. She approaches Hercule Poirot to help her and being fascinated he agrees. He has to interview all the people who had anything to do with the murder. These include a governess, a scientist and the girl's relation. It is rather intriguing and it has been ..." Read review

Pick and Mix Agatha Christie

AdvantagesShort (but in no way less compelling) than the full length Christies but which will take a fraction of the time to read. dive in and out whenever you feel like a good old murder!

DisadvantagesDoesn't have the same appeal as sitting in front a roaring fire with your mug of cocco reading a full book with all the minor points left in.

"For when you want all the suspence, drama, suprise and muder of a full length Christie, but in half an hour. Each one of these Miss Marple mysteries are up to Christie's best, with the pure ingenious plots taking your breath away. From wallpaper that changes colour, murders which nobody would ever notice to self-driving cars, Miss Marple lays her finger on the guilty party sitting in her armchair in fromt of the fire, whilst the cream of society ..." Manufacturer's product description

A facsmile first edition hardback of the Miss Marple books, published to mark the 75th anniversary of her first appearance and to celebrate her new-found success on television. When The Murder at the Vicarage was published in October 1930, little did the literary world realise that Agatha Christie, already famous for her early Poirot titles, was introducing a character who would become the best-loved female sleuth of all time. The 14 Marple books would appear at intervals over the next 49 years, with Miss Marple's Final Cases published in 1979, three years after Agatha's death. To mark the 75th anniversary of Miss Marple's first appearance, and to celebrate her renewed fortunes as a primetime television star, this collection of facsimile first editions will be the perfect way to enjoy these books in their original form - 12 novels and two short story collections. Reproducing the original typesetting and formats from the first editions from the Christie family's own archive copies, these books sport the original covers which have been painstakingly restored from the best available copies, reflecting five decades of iconic cover design.

I didn't guess who the murderer was!
The hero's a bit of a limp lettuce. (*)
Fast paced and full of suspence
Maybe should have been released in December? (*)
Well written, enjoyable, evocative
Characters sometimes hard to remember, a bit too long (*)
Will make you grateful for modern policing
Not really about the crime or criminial, protagonist suffers excessive guilt (*)
Intriguing central character; interesting locations; good tempo
Terrible type-setting; some incredible elements (*)
