I read this with my two little boys last night. It is one of our family’s favourites. It is a lovely book, just long enough to hold a young child’s attention.
The plot >>>>>>>>>
Sophie is a little girl who lives with her mum and dad. One day there is a knock at the door as Sophie and her mum are about to have tea. We then go through a list of who it could possibly be. It can’t be the milkman because it is not his day to call, the delivery boy has already been. Dad has a key. Sophie opens the door to see a large, friendly tiger standing there! The tiger is invited in for tea and proceeds to eat all the sandwiches, all the cakes and then drinks all the milk from the milk jug and all the tea straight out of the teapot. Still not satisfied he goes into the kitchen and eats all the food there too. The tiger finally drinks all the water out of the tap. Sophie is not even able to have a bath, as there is no water in the taps. The tiger then thanks his hosts for a lovely tea and leaves. At this point daddy arrives home and saves the day by suggesting that they all go out for tea even though it is past Sophie’s bedtime. Sophie and her mum go shopping the next day to buy more food and a big tin of tiger food in case the tiger comes again, but he never does!
My two children really love this book and we have read it more times than I can remember! The illustrations are delightful with lots of detail to encourage discussion. The book does have a dated feel as it was written in the 1970’s. My wife laughs at the fact it is good old dad who saves the day in this story, whilst mum is left to do the shopping to replace the food!
The book is written by Judith Kerr, who is also the author of the Mog books, another favourite. It is available from Amazon for £4.99. It can also be purchased as an audio tape and book set from most book shops.

Advantages: I think it has good quality pictures which you can use as a starting point with younger children. Disadvantages: Can have limited life as your children grow up.
