The government continue with their unbelievable corruption to govern the country in their inept manner, staging pretend assasinations, petioning FIFA to have a penalty decision against the country reversed and funding guerillas.
Cardinal Guzman is visited by a pantheon of private demons and in an effort to rid himself of them he launches a horrifying Inquisition upon the country. The Inquisition descend upon the unsuspecting populace to root out heresies and unbelievers.
The citizens of Cochadebajo de los Gatos continue to establish their idyllic neo-civilisation in the mountains, the ex-whores, ex-guerillas, de-frocked priest and giant black cats living their lives apart from the rest of the country. They entertain the British Ambassador, bring down a helicopter and finally come to a spectacular confrontation with the Inquisition.
I loved this book as much as Don Emmanuel and Captain Corelli, Louis de Berniers writing style is wonderful, his sense of humour is perverse and slightly black but very entertaining. The characters introduced in Don Emmanuel are here enlarged upon and we grow to love them even more, along with the new friends we meet.
This book is unlike anything else you will have read and is a wonderfully imaginative story which will keep you entertained throughout. I read it on holiday in about two days and loved it.

Review of The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman - Louis De Bernieres
...throughout. I was hooked from the very start and the story is compelling and reveals the latin culture well. As usual, the wit of Bernieres shines to the fore, and the story reflects his cynicism of many areas of life, such as the latin clergy and the corruption of society. However, the main thrust of the story is very positive and pleasing to read. It is about the reaction of the clergy to paganism in the countryside, and is a parallel to the counter ...

Advantages: Well written, good themes, sharp humour. Disadvantages: Hard going at the start
...is not until later in the book that you can see how it all fits together. In places it can be quite surreal as well. An example of this was when a 200 year old Spanish conquistadore came back to life and demanded his ring back from one of his descendents.
However, in spite of these shortcomings, if you persevere with this novel you will be in for a really good read. It is well written with a depth of characterisation and attention to detail which ... ...do with who exactly is the guardian of morality and belief in the world. It shows what happens when the church gets aggressive and the chaos caused by power hungry bullies who mask their evil in a show of religious fervour. The story does paint the Catholic church in a bad light. Through all the turmoil, hope shines in the lives of the villagers, and strangely enough, in Cardinal Guzman too. ...

Advantages: Witty and wise. Well-drawn characters. Amazing discriptions of places and people. Disadvantages: Complex story lines with an abundance of sub plots making it difficult to follow.
After once more having the privilege of listening to LouisdeBernières talk at this year's Hat Festival, I treated myself to some of this novels - three in fact, the trilogy that is comprised of this the book I am reviewing, The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts and Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord and The TroublesomeOffspring of CardinalGuzman.
The only previous experience of reading a LouisdeBernières novel was the renowned Captain Correlli's Mandolin. The style of writing came as a bit of a surprise.
The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts falls into the literary genre of magical realism. Not a genre I was familiar with and one that sounds to all intents and purposes like an oxymoron - magical realism!! Its roots apparently lie with one Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Also known as Gabo born 1927, Marquez. is a Colombian novelist ...
