Tell me the truth, Nicole Richie
[A review of her novel "The truth about diamonds"]
What is it? "The truth about diamonds" is a novel by celebrity Nicole Richie. This book tells a bit of her life, but written from an interesting perspective. Nicole Richie writes as the best friend of a girl named Chloe. Chloe goes through similar events to what Nicole Richie has gone through in her real life - being adopted, taking drugs, becoming famous and making vicious friends. Thus Nicole Richie avoids ridiculing herself, hurting the friends she described in the novel and she also does very well at oberserving her own behaviour in the past and projecting it into Chloe.
Who is Nicole Richie? Nicole Richie is singer Lionel Rcihie's adopted daughter. She used to be best friends with Paris Hilton and became famous by staring in "The simple life" with her. "The simple life" had the two rich girls swearing off the glamour life for a while to travel the country and life with 'normal' families. The show was a grat success and went into fours rounds. When Paris Hilton and Nicole
Richie had a major fall out, the show was continued with the girls competing at helping out a family. Nicole's fame went up to It Girl status when she started working as a photo model. While she had been shapely before, she lost an immense amount of weight. She was all across the magazines and it was assumed that she is anorexic. Nicole Richie now has a daughter with her boyfriend Benji Madden and is expecting another child. She seems to be happy and healthy.
The Truth About Diamonds
The plot Chloe parker is a rock royalty princess. After a rich rockstar adopted her, her life became an exciting whirlwind in Hollywoods VIP lists. But that also means getting into contact with drugs and finding friends who are not what they appear to be. When Chloe's friend Simone wants Chloe to hop on board of a national make up campaign that will run a documentary on the two, Chloe's path to fame seems to be set. When she discovers that Simone is not the good friend she appears to be, Chloe decided to do her own thing. Nicole Richie is the speaker in this novel and tells us the story as a good friend who meets Chloe in various states of mind. Of course, this novel seems to be one big metaphor for Nicole Richie's own life. She is Chloe while Simone equals Paris Hilton. The documented campaign is a hint at "The Simple Life" in which Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton starred. If you know a lot about Nicole Richie and her life, you will love figuring out who's who in this novel.
What the book looks like I have the beautiful hardcover version here. The books is black woth a wrapped-around cover sporting a big photograph of Nicole Richie wearing a big tiara and looking quite sad. The title of the novel is written in beautiful curvy letters and below that it says "A Novel" in capital leters. Below that we get Nicole Richie's name in bigger, capital letters. On the back of the book there is a picture of Nicole as a ballerina on a little stage. She is skinny, tanned and smiiling. There is also a barcode. On the insides of this sleeve we get a little summary of the book and a passage from the book. There is also a short biography on Nicole. It has been published by Harper Collins.
Inside the book The book has 224 pages plus two pages of aknowledgements. In the middle of the book there are more photographs of Nicole as her character Chloe whcih symbolize and illustrate how Chloe changes through out the book. The first picture shows Nicole Richie with the crown she wears on the cover photo, but smiling and in a slightly different pose. On the next two pages we get more photographs of her in pink ballerina attire. She looks really beautiful and innocent in those pictures. The next two photographs show her as a school girl writing "I will be a good girl" on a blackboard. I believe these pictures came from a fashion shoot. The next photograph covers two pages and show Nicole tarted up with bright blue eyeshadow and a golden dress standing between little Las Vegas signs. These photographs should probably symbolize how Chloe changes when she becomes best friends with Simone. The next picture also covers to pages and shows her lying between the Vegas signs. The next picture is quite sad - it shows Nicole Richie with run black make up, gazing at the photographer through glasses and bottles of champagne. The next pages shows another version of this picture, but with another one of Nicole all cleaned up again next to it. The last two photographs show Nicole in a white dress, looking better and clean again, but more grown up and serious than the pictures of her with the crown. The photographs illustrate Chloe's changes really well.
Why I like the book I've been fascinated with Nicole Richie since I saw "The simple life" for the first time. She is really witty and funny and while she is always dressed up to the max in some way, she always behaves like she couldn't care less. She has grown up to have an even better fashion sense now and she has proven that the change from party girl to caring mother can be done. It must have taken her a lot of courage to turn her back to Paris Hilton - she could have stayed in her lime light forever but she chose not to. She did her own thing and succeeded, being the talk of the walk, getting model job and appearing in almost every magazine in the world. She has become just as famous as Paris and her book outranks the memoir book Paris Hilton 'wrote'. While Nicole Richie has written her book herself, Paris Hilton had someone write it for her and gathered a few photographs. Nicole Richie has a very cool and casual way of writing without sounding silly. The speech is posh but not silly posh.
Price I ordered this book in Amazon and paid $23.95 since it's a hardcover. The paperback is available on Amazon.co.uk for £7.19.
Recommendation The book is like a serious turn on chic-lit. No wild shopping sprees and boyfriend trouble are the main themes here, but false friends, society problems and drugs. If you want to get a glimpse at It Girl life (or want to see what an It Girl writes like), I highly recommend this book. I think Nicole Richie has a lot of courage to write about herself in such a criticising way and the result is absolutely good for a first novel. You will like this book if you like celebrities, drug stories and Hollywood Insight.
4 stars from me! :)
