The 'Very Midsummer Madness' of Twelfth Night

Advantages: Stubbs, Bonham Carter, Kingsley, Hawthorne; adaptation; Cornwall, music.
Disadvantages: Text almost skeletal in its abridgement.

In traditional celebrations of Twelfth Night, or night of the Epiphany, the normal order of things was reversed. Such is the case in this entertaining and oft-quoted Shakespearean comedy of the same name, set in a fictitious Italianate land in the 1890s. Indeed, strange, funny things are happening in Illyria, upon whose rocky shores the twins Viola and Sebastian end up after a ferocious sea storm has demolished their vessel. Separated after the violent storm and shipwreck, Viola and Sebastian each thinks the other has drowned. Viola decides to disguise her own sex whilst also honouring her lost brother's memory by seeking employment as a page at the court of Orsino, the Duke of Illyria. Fresh from some unnamed battle, the lovesick Orsino fancies himself madly in love with the Lady Olivia, who, however, will have none of him. Olivia ...

Across the Barricades

Advantages: Learning about Irland -sometimes interesting
Disadvantages: Starts slow, rather boring.

At school, we had to read this book, "Across the Barricades". I have to say, it's bad since I found it really boring (maybe since I was forced to read it). The story is about 2 kid's : Kevin and Sadie and their dangerous relationship in Belfast. The problem is : Kevin is Catholic and Sadie is Protestant. Even though this book is the second in Joan Lingard'series, you can either read the book which came before : "The Twelfth Day of July", or enjoy "Across the Barricades" on it's own. Other book's in Joan Lingard's Kevin and Sadie series are "Into Exile","A Proper Place" and "Hostages to Fortune". I wont be telling a summary of the story since, there would be no point in reading it otherwise. It's just a romantic *novel* and belongs to the romantic section of books. I myself did not like "Across the Barricades" and I suppose this ...

Review of Across the Barricades - Kevin and Sadie - Joan Lingard

Julie & Julia- A delicious journey!

Advantages: Award worthy performances,strong screenplay
Disadvantages: the subject might not appeal to many

Julia and Julia is director Nora Ephron's adaptation of two books:one written by Julia Child and another by Julie Powell.Any film that takes life from life itself is usually good and this film is no different. The film tells the story of Julia Child, the author of the famous cookbook and Julie Powell,a simple working woman who decides to make Julia's recipes by herself and decides to write a blog about it.The two stories(one set in 1940s when Julia was young and another set in 2002 when Julie is reading Julia's book) run parallely on screen and unfolds gradually on screen. Both women share lot of similarities in their respective lives and the director lays it down beautifully for the viewer to experience. If you feel this is a film for women, you are certainly mistaken.Yes,the central characters are women and it involves cooking ...
