I have quite an addiction to Sophie Kinsella's books and after reading the Shopaholic series I had to another one of her other books and I was not disappointed.
This book is about Samantha Sweeting who is a top lawyer based in London and employed by a large law firm called Carter Spink. Samantha is determined to become Partner and works over 66 hours a week, pulls all nighters and even works weekends. Her life revolves around the stresses of work and finds she has no time for herself.
I could relate to Samantha because she breaks up her day into 6 minute segments and I have to admit I do find myself splitting my day into hour segments, when I have a lot of things to do...strange I know :-). I think a lot of people can relate to the character Samantha because we all go through pockets of stress at work, find we have no time for ourselves and think it would be nice to leave real life and become someone else for a while.
Samantha finds out she has made a big mistake at work and is in such a blind panic she walks out of the office and onto the next train out of London. When getting off the train she goes to manor house to ask for directions (and an aspirin) when she is mistaken for a housekeeper looking for a job. The only thing is she can't cook, clean, iron or do any domesticated tasks but that does not stop Samantha lying about her experience in the kitchen.
We join Samantha's journey learning new skills, forgetting about her life in London (sending emails and working around the clock), she even finds a new interest….the gardener Nathaniel. Samantha is enjoying her new life, having weekends off, only working a number of hours then finishing for the day and of course her new boyfriend. Everything seems perfect but she still has that niggling feeling that she has been wronged at Carter Spink. Samantha turns into a detective trying to uncover the truth behind her mistake at Carter Spink and uncovers an interesting twist.
The story reminds me of Cinderella, Samantha doing the household chores and her new employers (the Geiger's) not knowing her secret identify…a lawyer.
I found the character Samantha similar to Rebecca Bloomwood (from the Shopaholic series) as they both lie and avoid things to get out of situations. This book had me laughing out loud especially when Samantha got herself in some tricky situations over the cooking and cleaning.
Sophie Kinesella's writing is excellent, her books are funny, witty and easy to read (which is what I like). At first I thought I would not get into this book after just recently finishing the Shopaholic series, but I was gripped and after finishing a chapter I wanted to continue reading. I think Kinsella is a fantastic writer and if she ever wrote a sequel to The Undomestic Goddess I would defiantly read it.
Will Samantha find out the truth behind the mistake that got her fired? Will she hang up her apron and go back to London? Or will she stay and be the Geigers housekeeper?
If you love Bridget Jones you will love this book!
