He wasn't hungry or little anymore.......'He was a big fat caterpillar.'
He proceeded to make a small house for himself and stayed there for 2 weeks until he nibbled his way out of his house and he was a beautiful butterfly!
~ Educational value ~This story follows the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his way through mountains of food which also incorporates the following educational aspects:
Children can join in with the chant of 'but he was still hungry'.
Helps build up children's sequencing and memory skills with ordering the food that he ate.
It teaches children about the life cycle of a caterpillar in a fun and colourful way.
It teaches the sequence of the days of the week.
It involves counting skills.
It helps children learn about different types of food.
~ Illustrations ~Eric Carle's technique of using layers of tissue paper which he sometimes paints or colours on and then pastes on to a white background is very apparant in this book.
His images are childlike but complex and the use of bright vibrant colours is excellent for young children who respond to bold, colourful drawings.
The sun and moon both have discreet 'smiley' faces on them which children like the idea of.
When the caterpillar turns in to a big, fat one, Carle has drawn it so that it takes up the whole of the page and the beautiful butterfly, with it's rich vibrant colours has been given a whole double page which children can't fail to 'wow' at.
My favourite aspect (and children's too) is the fact that Carle has used a technique of cutting holes in the centre of each piece of food that the caterpillar has eaten it's way through which look very much like a leaf in the garden that a caterpillar has nibbled through so making it look as if the caterpillar really has munched it's way through all of it.
In the section where the caterpillar is eating the fruit, on Monday 1, on Tuesday 2 pears and so on, Eric Carle has used paper of varying sizes so that the sequence of the food can be seen by the reader and you can even get in to the concept of 'how many more?' with older children.
~ Age Range ~
I would suggest age 2 upwards (especially the board book for very little hands that can rip pages)
~ Price ~
My paperback Puffin book (ISBN: 0 -140-56932-4) was £5.99 but www.amazon.co.uk and www.ebay.co.uk have some very good bargains, e.g. used and new from £2 as of February 2006. Well worth looking around for bargains!
~ Products ~
This book is available in paperback, hardcover, board book & Big Book format.
There is an Audio CD of the story by Collins.
Hamish Hamilton Ltd have produced a lovely book and toy gift set.
Puffin have also made a 'My own very hungry caterpillar colouring book' which is a huge hit with children.
~ Other Eric Carle Books ~ Too many to write a list of but here are a few to wet your appetite:
The tiny seed Little cloud The bad-tempered ladybird Rooster's off to see the world Today is Monday.
In short, the imaginative illustrations and clever cut out detail charting the progress of a very hungry caterpillar is a fantastic book for young children with HUGE educational value.
Advantages: A timeless classic that your child will enjoy time and time again. Disadvantages: You may have to read this story so many times it will become permanently imprinted in your brain.

...~~~~The Story and Illustrations~~~~
The story focuses around a very small caterpillar who on a bright sunny morning pops out of the egg. The picture gives us our first introduction to the caterpillar- exactly as children would imagine a caterpillar to look- green with a little red face, legs and two large antennae. It really is sunny, and we can tell because the sun on this double page spread is bright and glowingly orange/yellow.
It's when the ... ...hungry. At this stage of the story, the left hand side of the double page is as normal- a shining sun and a caterpillar looking for food. The right hand pages become rather like an index, with the first page showing two apples and being cut quite close to the spine and after that they get slightly bigger and we see more of the foods he has eaten. On Monday he eats an apple, Tuesday two pears, Wednesday he ate through three plums, Thursday four strawberries, ...

The very hungry caterpillar
Br Eric Carle
This is a simple but beautiful book cleverly put together with timeless appeal. It was first published way back in 1969 but still feels fresh and vibrant all these years later. My son loves it and he’s only nine months! The illustrations are what make this a wonderful book Carle has a style that is all his own mixing lively brushwork with delicate collage. We have two versions of the book one is small, ... ...push through those holes.
The smaller of the two books is ideal for my son to look at by himself (he loves books) and at only £4.99 is a must for any parent. The story is very simple and traces the life of a very hungry Caterpillar from an egg on a large green leaf to the magical day when he turns into a beautiful Butterfly. The first page starts with a warm blue moon looking over the leaf that the egg is resting on with the text:
“In the ...

All that's left for him to do is build a small house for himself to stay in for a couple of weeks before pushing his way out when he is a beautiful butterfly.

"In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf…."
I can recite the whole thing (well, maybe getting a little confused with the order of the different foods) and I bet I'm far from the only one! The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been around for a loooong time - nearly as long as I have, in fact, and that's ages - and is rightly regarded as a children's classic, which has been translated into over 50 languages. Apparently, a copy is sold every ... ...George W Bush has listed the book among his favourites from when he was growing up… a statement which raised a few eyebrows as he was, in fact, twenty-three when the book was first published in 1969. ~The Author~

Advantages: simple text, beautiful and engaging art work, educationally fun Disadvantages: none
trying his hand at short stories to go with his own artwork. His first book that was written and illustrated completely by himself was 1,2,3, to the Zoo. It was a big hit, and was shortly followed by perhaps his most famous work, The VeryHungryCaterpillar. So enduring and timeless are his stories, that each book he has written is still in print today, and used in pre-schools and kindergartens around the world.
~~~The Book~~~
Anyone familiar with this artist's work can instantly recognise who did the illustrations without having to read the blurb. Carle's work is quite distinctive, with printed collages of hand painted paper and the ever so slight suggestion of texture. The art is quirky, and appealing to both children and adults, who instantly warm up to the character of the caterpillar shown on the very first page. The dialogue is ...
Advantages: good illustrations east to read Disadvantages: lacks something if you compare it to other books that the author has done
EricCarles the very busy spider tell the story of a spider weaving a web on a farm yard gate. the spider is often interupted by the farm yard animals with offers of rides and other such things but the busy spider carries on weaving his web. The book is illustrated very well - the web is raised up on the pages of this board book for little fingers to touch but it some how just does not reach to the high standards of EricCarles other books eg the veryhungrycaterpillar. I woulsd suggest that you borrowed this book from your local libarey instead of going out and buying it. overall it's not bad but it's not brilliant either ...
Advantages: Repetitve and easy for kids to pick up Disadvantages: Some of the animals are strange colours
This book is written by EricCarle which is the same guy who wrote classics like 'The hungrycaterpillar' and 'The very busy spider'. He is very well known and when I saw this one at our local library, I could tell it was written by him even before I read his name because the illustrations on the front was so distinctive. I normally spend a few moments flicking through a book to see if I think it's suitable for Noah but with this one I didn't because I knew it would be good.
The text within the book is very repetitive and simple to the point where Noah who is two, had remembered it even though we had only read it to him once. Every page is the same and the only thing that changes is the animal that features on each double spread.
The pictures are very big and bold and the only thing that features on the double page is one animal ...
