This is a fantastic little story about a lazy ladybird that sleeps all day and night and so had never learnt to fly. She wakes one day on her leafy resting place and decides she would like to sleep somewhere else…but where could she sleep as she can't fly anywhere?

The Very Lazy Ladybird by Isabel Finn and Jack Tickle
This is a fantastic little story about a lazy ladybird that sleeps all day and night and so had never learnt to fly. She wakes one day on her leafy resting place and decides she would like to sleep somewhere else…but where could she sleep as she can't fly anywhere?
At this point a kangaroo hops past and the lazy ladybird hops into her pouch but decides that she can't sleep there because it is too bumpy for her…as the story progresses we see the lazy ladybird hopping on to various different animals as she tries to find somewhere comfortable to sleep…but it proves futile as she is always out off by something each animal does, until she meets one animal she thinks is just right until something happens which changes her mind……
I won't give away the ending as it is such a fun story to tell especially for the first time as my daughter and I found out when reading this together tonight. She is 6 years old but loves stories that she can read alone like this one, made even easier with the help of the CD accompanied with the book, which I will talk more about in a moment.
The story is pleasantly illustrated with bright colourful cartoon pictures of the animals which young children will recognise instantly, Jack Tickle is the illustrator and has done so for many children's books including:- The Crunching Munching Caterpillar Itsy Bitsy Spider The Teeny Weeny Tadpole To name but a few
The story itself is repetitive which appeals to all children, especially in the 3-5 age range who learn a story quickly by repetition. Children like to guess what happens next in this story too, they see the next animal passing and guess which part of the body the lazy ladybird will HOP onto….and then have to guess why that animal wouldn't be suitable…
This story brings all of the well known animals into play, and can be used as a topic for various things, maybe when the weather gets better children can go in the garden and look for ladybirds, look at ladybirds in other picture books, it can prompt discussions about what animals walk like, sound like etc and is very useful for physical play too as the children can pretend to be the Jumping Kangaroo…the Hopping Ladybird, and the other animals too.
Isabel Finn is a wonderful children's author whom I haven't come across before now…I tried looking on the internet for more information about her but couldn't really find any as yet. But I will definitely be on the lookout for more of her books in future!
Now I mentioned that this is a CD accompanied storybook which enhances it hugely in my opinion…although I do prefer reading stories to children myself there are times when the children in my nursery just want to spend some time alone reading/listening to stories on their own, with no adult presence. This encourages their independence and confidence in reading. Jamie Theakston (Top of the Pops/Live and Kicking presenter) and Doon Mackichan (Smack the Pony) are the narrators who bring this book to life and they do a fantastic job of it too, clearly spoken with a lovely musical background and super sound effects that children love to point out.
This book is available without the CD also for £4.99 at Amazon…but when you see the price I paid for it as part of a package from The Book People then you would be wasting your money just buying one book!
Now these books retail at £7.99 each from various retailers, Amazon sell them at £6.30 but I got 5 of these books for just £8.99 from the Book People catalogue in November. I can't see these on their website so not sure if they are still available as a pack but it's always worthwhile emailing them to see if it is still available. Other books in this pack are:- Quiet by Paul Bright / Guy Parker-Rees The Crunching Munching Caterpillar by Sheridan Cain / Jack Tickle Fidgety Fish by Ruth Galloway The Very Noisy Night by Diana Hendry / Jane Chapman.
All of which are available from most good bookstores or online separately too!
