What does the modern Ms want from life and love? It's a question that Imogen Edward-Jones ... more
attempts to answer in her third novel. InThe Wendy Housethe choice is strictly limited to domestic goddess or dedicated career woman. Charlie is a war photographer who has spent her life taking pictures of "charred bodies, mass burials", and she returns from her travels emotionally bruised and a little worn out. Her sister Kate used to be "feisty, funny, clever and naughty" but now is a yummy mummy with a gorgeous house.Early on in the book it's pretty clear where Imogen Edward-Jones's sympathies lie and it isn't with the sister with the collection of copper pans and organic vegetables. Charlie may embark on a disastrous love affair with a fellow photographer and she may have spent her life travelling from hell hole to hell hole, but her choices are represented as vital, viable ones. Kate's aspirational lifestyle is treated with not so subtle contempt. It's no surprise to discover that her domestic idyll is far from idyllic, and that her husband is two timing her with her best friend; the judgmental odds are stacked against her from the start. By the end of the novel Kate has realised that she "used to have a life" and she wants one again. Charlie is still taking photographs, but has also managed to find true love. What the modern Ms wants, according toThe Wendy House, is a bit of work, a bit of play and a bit of romance. --Eithne Farry

In a lot of homes there is not enough room for a Wendy house to be erected but a child may find a corner or somewhere to use as his/ her house (yes boys as well as girls can and do play house) a favourite place to make a house is under the table or behind the sofa I used to play under the table with the table cloth on it (more secret) and give my dolls cups of tea pretend to be my mum “ do you want a cup of tea Ellen” “you know my little girl Mary has been so naughty”
A good place to have a Wendy house is outside. A garden shed is a good place cleared of all garden junk .A few house toys installed a cooker, a small chair a table some cupboards/drawers. A toy telephone a toy tea set a few dolls a dolls cot/bed any house toys or real ones you no longer need. A garden shed can be converted into a playhouse easily then back to a shed when no longer used for play.
There are a few Wendy houses that can be used outside put up like a tent. These are good but I prefer to have the shed it is always there and does not need taking down, put inside at night.
I had a Wendy house my dad made me a shed outside. Dad put a telephone link into the house in it so I could get called in without them having to come and get me. I used to have my secret club meeting in there, no one entered with out the secret knock and a password. On a summers day we would be allowed to eat my tea in my house. I kept dressing up clothes in there. We made magic spells, they did not work my sister did not turn into a frog. I was not a princess but I pretended to be. I used to sweep up magic dust I was invisible my dad never saw me pick the strawberries and eat them.
A Wendy house helps promote social skills, how to play, share with others. Play practicing for real life. Children practise how it feels to be ill in bed, practice for how it feels to be mummy and daddy arguing, kissing. Practicing having a party. Practicing all their experiences. I love watching children play house you can see and hear other people in their actions, the way they tell their dolls off. The way they cuddle them. The way they make and serve dinner. A lot of children’s play actions are copied from grown ups or the telivision. By playing they are developing their own skills.
Not just social skills but manipulative skills, how to pour a cup of tea, make the bed, put the nappy on dolly, stir the dinner.
I could go on for ages. If you have the space inside or out I would certainly recommend a Wendy house for your child.
Must go and play house now washing up and vacuuming to do, oh I forgot its real not play I am grown up have fun playing LOL Mary Age group on the form I had to limit the age but a wendy house is suitable for a wider range than I sugested a middle age range.
...a lovely wendy house from the argos for £249.99
I wanted a tree house but the hubby wouldnt let me.
Our wendy house is a one story little house which is made of wood. It is painted yellow, the window frames are blue and so are the little plant boxes under the windows which i have put little plastic plants in, the roof is also painted blue.
It has a little door on the front, with a window either side of the door and a window on each side that opens ... ...a table and chairs.
The girls spend hours playing in there, they take there dolls out there and have tea partys in there, it is there very own little house.
I keep saying little house as it is smaller than mine but it is about 6 foot wide by about 4 foot deep by 5 foot high so it realy isnt that little after all. ...

Advantages: Baby is safe from big sister's toys! Disadvantages: Expensive - worth the money though
to sit in it to read or do any paperwork that I didn't want her to get.
I recently got it out for our second baby but my older child likes to go in it to hide her toys from her baby sister and they are both happy with that so I am too.
Also, you can get two to fix together if necessary to make a bigger playpen which I have considered for our toddler group.
When the kids grow out of it there is a tent attachment you can get to give it a much longer life! They then love to play in it again. It turns it into a wendyhouse.
When my baby was tiny at Christmas we actually put the christmas tree inside it to stop the baby getting to the tree and the presents!!
I know a lot of parents don't like the idea of playpens but it really has served a purpose in our house.
It easily folds away to store. I keep the one from toddler group ...
Advantages: Unisex, durable, great value for money, Disadvantages: Kids might fight over who gets to drive it
This kiddies car is a classic kids toy. I have not yet met any child who does not love this car, strangley enough even if there is the police version or another company's copy of this car children seem drawn to the little tikes cosy coupe in red and yellow. We bought one for our daughter as a first birthday present. She was probably a lttle young at this point as she couldnt reach the floor, which left her open to falling through the bottom. Once she'd reached about 18months though she could use her tiptoes to make the car move forward and back, this seemed to delight her and she would spend hours tiptoeing it to her petrol pump, or to her wendyhouse. Although ony made for one child my daughter often shared it with either a friend or her little brother, as two tinys will fit side by side on the seat. The storage space at the back ...
Advantages: Safe, comfortable, roomy, easily accessible, well designed. Disadvantages: Choose colour wisely - black looks like a prison! Quite a lot larger than traditional playpens.
looked a bit like a miniature prison! It is well made in a kind of powder coated finish so it is not as cold as a metal frame.
We found it difficult to assemble at first but subsequently realised it is quite easy once you know how - don't forget to look at the little position markers - they help you assemble it in the correct shape.
We were also bought the optional play tent which fits over the top of the playpen to create a wendyhouse. I think this is a wonderful way to elongate the life span of the playpen.
Finally - nearly forgot to mention - door opens to access baby so no more bending up/down to lift baby out. Ideal if you have a bad back or a heavy baby!
Babydan Babyden can also be used in other configurations such as fire gate, stairgare, room divider etc... Additional parts can be purchased although extra fixings are ...
