The Wheel of Time consists of nine novels at present (the rumour is that it will finish at thirteen).
Book 1 - The Eye of the World - 1990 Book 2 - The Great Hunt - 1990 Book 3 - The Dragon Reborn - 1991 Book 4 - The Shadow Rising - 1992 Book 5 - The Fires of Heaven - 1993 Book 6 - Lord of Chaos - 1994 Book 7 - A Crown of Swords - 1996 Book 8 - The Path of Daggers - 1998 Book 9 - Winter's Heart - 2000
The books are originally published in the US by Tor books and by Orbit in the UK.
The series starts in a little place called the Two Rivers where we are introduced to five of the central characters - Rand, Matrim, Perrin, Nynaeve and Egwene. Other central characters (including Elayne, Min, Aviendha) are intoduced later, usually upon introduction to the other five.
Rand, Matrim and Perrin are what is known as ta'veren (focal points of history) by the Aes Sedai (female users of the One Power - magic). The One power has a female side (saidar) and a male side (saidin), but the male side has been corrupted by evil's taint and prolonged use drives men insane. Nynaeve and Egwene are found by the Aes Sedai to be strong in the One Power and are taken to be trained in the home of the Aes Sedai - Tar Valon. Any men found using the One Power are 'stilled' (cut off from the source of the power) by the Red Ajah (a sect of Aes Sedai dedicated to finding and capturing men who can use the One power (channel). The problem is that prophecy says that a man who can channel will be needed to face the Dark One at the final battle. He will be the Dragon Reborn (the first Dragon was called Lews Therin and he literally broke the world when he fought the Dark One first time around)
From this humble beginning is woven an incredibly detailed narrative. From book one to book five it rushes along, enthralling the reader. It has to be said that books six, seven and eight do slow down a lot but the pace returns with book nine. It is difficult enough to give an opinion on one book, without spoiling it and to give an opinion on an entire series is even more difficult.
Robert Jordan describes the world on which the Wheel of Time is focussed, in very rich detail. Different cultures, politics and races are explored, making the world seem very real. His description of the characters is also just as good. You get so involved with the books that you genuinely care about the characters and can visualize the scenes in which they find themselves.
As with most fantasy novels the story is about the battle between good and evil, in this case the good being called the Dragon and the bad the Dark One. The difference is that the battle has already been fought before and for good to triumph, the world was broken and peoples scattered. It's always at the back of your mind that this could happen again, and that although good might triumph the cost will be phenomenal.
I cannot fully describe the depth and scope of this series. It could quite literally run and run, going as high as twenty books, because of the multiple plot lines that run through the series. If you've read anything by Feist, Eddings, Brooks, Gemmell or Goodkind and haven't read any of the Wheel of Time books then read them. While Jordan writes in a different style to any of the other fantasy authors, it is seldom boring and ultimately more fulfilling. If you've never read a fantasy book and want to know where to start, then there isn't a better place really.
Advantages: Extremely detailed, interesting storyline, lots to read. Disadvantages: Very, very long, delay between books, occasional unrealistic portraels of characters and similarities of others.
...I had to see if the books really were as good as people said and bought the first one. After reading the first book I felt that the series deserved all the hype it had received, the story was interesting and I was truly drawn into the world, however many of the future books just don't live up to the first few.
--Storyline--
The storyline is complex and has a large number of themes running at once, because the series is quite long and people won't ... ...into too much detail on the storyline here.
Currently spanning 9 books, the story and character really do evolve as you progress through the books and in many ways aren't even recognisable to how they initially appeared (as they like to tell you over and over again in later books :).
3 boys, all of whom appear no different to most other people find themselves thrust into something they would never have imagined possible. All 3 are to play a part ...

Advantages: Excellent guide to the history and geography of the 'Wheel of Time', Adds to the knowledge of the books Disadvantages: Poor illustrations, Not for those who haven't read the novels
Having only started reading the Robert Jordan ‘Wheel of Time’ series and thoroughly enjoying it I decided to buy the compendium of the history, geography and sociology of the world where Jordan’s books are set that accompanied the novels. The book illustrates how the world in which the books has been shaped to the current time and is excellent in illustrating what is not fully explained.
The compendium itself is split into three ... ...from the Age of Legends. The style of writing is that of someone actually living in Jordan’s world recording the history and, therefore, there are many references to the lack of sources and contemporary accounts. The history takes in account the War of the Shadow and the Time of the Breaking giving accounts of the Dark one and the Forsaken as well as Lews Therin and the hundred Companions.
The rest of the history tells of how the world was ...

...are able to agree on The Wheel of Time. Some say this series grows more exciting with each new volume. Others say that the first three or four books held promise and excitement before the series descended into a complex mess of boredom. Some view the female characters as being so strong that they believe Robert Jordan is actually a woman writing under a pen name; others say the women inhabitants of Randland (as fans refer to it) are dull caricatures ... ...notch with Stephen King at the very top of my authors-to-worship list. But in truth, there is really only one work created by Jordan which I hold in such high regard: The Wheel of Time series. Almost every other work of fiction I have read pales in comparison. If not for the Wheel of Time, I never would have touched the genre of fantasy. There are certainly some elements in this unique series which have sparked legitimate criticism. In The Eye of ...

No! WAIT! don't leave quite yet, let me validate all this before you flush this book from your 'to read list' faster than last night's curry. ...faced with eight books ( the ninth one has only just been released ), each three inches thick. However, I was assured by my better half, that they were well worth the read, and I haven’t been disappointed.
I am new to fantasy books, I started with the obligatory “Hobbit” & “Lord of the Rings” and though I found these a good read they were hard going at times.
The “Wheel of time” series has kept me gripped ... ...The basic storyline is of a group of youngsters from a sleepy farming village. They have rarely left the safety of the village, and are unaware of the world outside. As it turns outs, three lads from the village are very special indeed – in very loose details – only they can save the world from the clutches of the Dark One.
The girls in the village are also quite special they are learning to be Aes Sedai – again in loose terms ...

Advantages: Final book of the Riftwar Saga, Pug and Tomas are back, fills in gaps left by the first two novels Disadvantages: You will want more
a welcome return, and more is discovered about the Valheru, the mystical demi-gods, one of whose power has been inherited by Tomas, through his wearing of the white and gold armour.
Again Feist's characters are beautifully described as is the world they inhabit. Battle scenes are well thought out and add to the tension. The pages and the hours flash by, as you rush to the final page and even then you will want to read more.
As standalone novels Magician is brilliant, Silverthorn good and A Darkness at Sethanon very good. As a series The Riftwar Saga is superb and there are few series to better it. (I can only think of RobertJordan's Wheel of Timeseries). True lovers of fantasy will already have read this, and anyone starting out should buy all three books and journey to the land of Midkemia. You will not be disappointed. ...

Knife of Dreams - RobertJordan
11th in the seriesWheel of Time
Like all of the other books in the series, Jordan delivers again. The story mostly follows Mat, Perrin, and Elayne, with a few chapters telling of Rand al'thor and Egwene. Mat is trying to escape the Seanchan and make his way into Murandy where his Band of the Red Hand await him while courting The Daughter of the Nine Moons.
Perrin awaits with his own army of Two Rivers, some Aiel, and Mayene's honor guard. He hopes to ambush the renegade Aiel, the Shaido, and take back his wife from captivity.
Elayne is safely in Caemlyn where she is trying to secure the throne of Andor and become queen as her mother once was. But the other houses have begun a siege to take the crown of Andor in their own hands thinking Elayne is not mature enough to handle.

Advantages: Great setting for the book, Excellent Characterisations, Very Descriptive to the point of reality Disadvantages: Long- 1000 pages or so, Long seires (9 books), Not to be read in one afternoon
I enjoy nothing more than a great fantasy book from some of this genres great authors: Tolkien, Feist and Magaret Weis to name a few. So when I got recommended The Wheel of Timeseries by RobertJordan by someone on Dooyoo, I couldn’t wait to give it a go. The series that is at this moment 9 books long starts with what is dubbed an all time classic- ‘The Eye of the World’. So it was with this book that I entered another realm in entirety.
The story line starts us in the little Hamlet of Emonds Field, home to three friends who are the focus of all the series, namely Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara. After one night of destruction at the hands of an untold evil the three friends become entwined in a journey with two strange travellers Moraine and Lan. Also the characters of Thom Merrilin; a gleeman ...
