The Works is a discount bookstore which can be found on many high streets. I have browsed around a fair few discount bookstores, but have always found this store to be the best in it’s class. Overall, I tend to find that a lot of discount bookstores sell a lot of uninteresting titles, & books you’ve never heard of. The Works does also fall into this category, but seems to also sell more bestsellers than other stores (often current ones at that), covering a wide range of authors. Books are laid out according to genre & are for the most part stacked on shelves with the cover facing forwards, so that you can see at a glance what titles are in stock. The more popular fiction & bestsellers are laid out on tables at the front of the store, with reference books & childrens books being on shelves running down the sides & back of the store. I love the childrens books here - there are some really good 'fun' educational books, & it's always a great place to pick a few up as presents.
But there’s more to The Works than just books. They stock a good range of arts & crafts materials, from paints & canvasses to card-making paraphernalia. Both adults & kids are catered for with regards to arts & crafts.
There are also quite a few toys for children, mainly smaller cheap novelty items…for when you need a ‘little something’ to keep them quiet, without spending too much! They do also stock more expensive branded name toys which (as with all of the stock) vary each time you visit. On my last shopping trip to The Works, I picked up a Brio babies first train set at the bargain price of £9.99 (£31.99 on Amazon!), & a Dr Seuss floor puzzle for £4.99. It’s always worth a look as they do often sell some quality items at vastly reduced prices.
Along with books, the store also sells a range of other media products such as video’s, DVD’s & PC games. You’ll probably only find titles that are years old or that no-one wants though, but obviously if there’s something here that appeals to you, then you can be guaranteed that it will be available at a good price.
The staff have always been very friendly & helpful – no complaints about customer service from me, & the store isn’t usually very busy so you can browse in peace & check-out quickly.
Personally, I tend not to shop here for something I'm specifically looking for, but it's a good store for impulse buys & presents.
