Wilde's works are suffused with his aestheticism brilliant craftsmanship legendary wit ... more
and ultimately his tragic muse. He wrote tender fairy stories for children employing all his grace artistry and wit of which the best-known is "The Happy Prince". Counterpoints to this were his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" which shocked and outraged many readers of his day and his stories for adults which exhibited his fascination with the relations between serene art and decadent life. Wilde took London by storm with his plays particularly his masterpiece "The Importance of Being Earnest". His essays - in particular "De Profundis" - and his "Ballad of Reading Gaol" both written after his release from prison strikingly break the bounds of his usual expressive range. His other essays and poems are all included in this comprehensive collection of the works of one of the most exciting writers of the late nineteenth century.

Advantages: all the works of Oscar Wilde are included (prose, critisicm, drama, poetry), affordable edition Disadvantages: the edition is liable to tear and wear, it is not aesthetically appealing
...'The portrait of Dorian Grey' the autobiographical 'De profundis' and his stories and fairytales) plays (such as 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and 'The Ideal husband') his critical works ('The Decay of Lying' etc) and his poems.
I cannot find a single line of Wilde that is boring, poorly written. If you want to read an elegantly written yet profound and touching book you can do no better. Though many people only know Oscar Wilde as an aphorist and a playwright I think it is his prose where his genius truly manifests itself. This edition is a great and very affordable opportunity to own all of Wilde including prose (such as his celebrated novel 'The portrait of Dorian Grey' the autobiographical 'De profundis' and his stories and fairytales) plays (such as 'The Importance of Being Earnest' and 'The Ideal husband') his critical works ('The Decay of Lying' etc) and his poems.
I cannot find a single line of Wilde that is boring, poorly written. If you want to read an elegantly written yet profound and touching book you can do no better. I was initially going to award this with 5 stars but it occurs me that there is a bitter irony in having the works of a celebrated aesthete sold for £4.99. Wilde adored beauty and elegance and this edition is not in keeping with his artistic credo. It is obviously cheap, vulnerable to tear and wear and impractical to carry around -it is not so very heavy as the paper is thin but I find that carrying it around and reading it in trains results to tears (mostly of the pages).
However contrary to my idol I believe that it is better to read a masterpiece in a cheap edition than being ignorant of his work and if you can afford a more luxurious edition this might be a good place to start.
Advantages: Everything Oscar Wilde has written Disadvantages: Cheap and tacky book won't last long
Firstly OscarWilde was a genius and it follows that any complete collection of his works is therefore good.
That siad a complete collection also has its flaws. Firstly the book is bulky and probably won't last long if your an avid reader. The print is small and the paper cheap. A true fan of wilde would probably be better off spending money on a decent edition of his works or buying their favourite pieces seperatly.
That said the content of this collection is superb. It includes all the well-known pieces adn much that is less well-known but no less readable. Some of the early poetry is not particuarly good and the essays and de profundis are hard going especially if you know little about wilde. The intor is servicable but nothing special and is worth reading as an overview.
Wildesworks thought are welll worth reading ...
this is a well presented edition. if i was to be a little critical i would say that the print is slightly too small for the pages but hten again it is an affordable edition of the complete works of oscarwilde and one can not demand too much. furthermore i would have liked a few more explanatiry notes to help in interpreatation and background, but the life of oscarwilde is already so well documented thi was probably thougth unnecessary. nevertheless the introduction is dgood and it is a very reaable work, presenting all his major efforts and making the works of one of the funniest authors ever more accessible to the peolple who should be reading them - the public ...
