many people's toes -- that's Jeremy Clarkson. And it's for those very reasons why for everyone for whom his name is anathema, there are an equal number will avidly consume his every word. As For Crying Out Loud: The World According to Clarkson, Volume 3 forcefully reminds us, Clarksons must venomous hatreds are reserved for political correctness, and his conducting of a one-man war on crimes against common sense has made him an unlikely hero for many, who husband their opinions with much greater care. Clarkson continues to be driven into a frenzy by a great variety of things that impinge on his consciousness, and his splenetic responses are immensely entertaining. What is the matter with people these days? If you've ever wondered that, youll find a hundred answers in this book, along with a discussion of why binge drinking is good for you, the difficult task of drumming in middle age (and, allied to this, the secret of eternal youth). Oh yes -- and America. Don't get Jeremy Clarkson started on America (in fact, it's too late you'll find some pithy observations on the States within these pages that are likely to make quite a few people's blood temperatures rise). Ironically, if we were to get stuck behind a taxi driver who harangued us like Jeremy Clarkson, wed be praying for a short journey. So why is it that For Crying Out Loud is so disgracefully entertaining? Perhaps it is because Clarkson -- when he is away from his beloved (and slightly boring) cars -- is immensely articulate at voicing his enthusiasms and pet hatreds (more of the latter than the former, it has to be admitted). One warning should accompany the book, though -- if you give it as a present to a loved one, be prepared to have great chunks read out loud ad infinitum (and perhaps ad nauseam) along the lines of Listen to what Clarkson says about X or Y! Boy, has he got this right! You might not want to share a taxi journey with Jeremy Clarkson, but reading his books are a whole different experience -- and, who knows, you might just end up agreeing with him. --Barry Forshaw

Probably like most people I first became aware of Jeremy Clarkson through the excellent TV programme Top Gear, a show that is not just for petrol heads as it is also one of the funniest programmes on TV as well given some of the stunts and challenges they do. In the show he is the arrogant, opinionated alpha male with a hearty dislike of Europe, foxes, anything environmentally friendly and French cars. Oh and political correctness. In addition to his TV work he also writes a newspaper column and is an author of a number of books.
Apart from the toilet reading on offer at my sister house this was the first Clarkson book that I have read and I was interested to see if the humour generated on Top Gear could be translated into the written word. The book itself is made up of a series of short, two or three page, rants or observations on a myriad of topics that stretch from the opening page discussion of an additional public holiday to such varied topics as the joys of the circus, the Campaign to Protect Rural England (he is not a fan surprise surprise) and the time he was hit by Stavros. Indeed the sections jump around randomly and the whole book feels like it is basically his newspaper columns recycled into a book.
Overall I found this an enjoyable book to read as it was one I took away with me on holiday the fact that it was a series of short monologues made it ideal however it is definitely not a page turner. In fact little sis has probably got it right when she leaves it in the loo for guests and her husband to read.
What I did enjoy about this book is that whether or not you agree with what he is saying Clarkson writing will evoke an opinion from the reader, there is no sitting on the fence with his writing. So it was that I found myself nodding in agreement with his opinions on what lottery funding should be used for and certainly those things it should not be. Then a few pages later I would find myself sniggering at the politically incorrect way that he has a pop at politically correct behaviour and once again I find that Mr Clarkson and I share a common opinion. On the other hand his views on Europe and in particular immigration are ones where I can find no common ground between us, but that is not a bad thing, from a personal stake I would hate the idea that I agreed with everything that he said, that would mean I had become a jean ruining clone of the man himself, just without the height and the bad hair.
Where the book does fall down as that Clarkson fails to be as funny s he is on Top Gear. Reflecting on this I guess I should not have been surprised, in Top Gear he has the perfect foils in the form of Hammond and May, the humour is all about three blokes mucking about in cars and you are not going to be able to recreate that comedy in a book. That does not mean to say there are not some funny passages in the book, indeed a couple of times I was made to laugh out loud and then have to try and explain it to my son, funny enough what I said must have sparked his interest because he started to read it as well.
The only other slightly annoying thing about this book was that at times Clarkson appears to have contracted the Radio 1 DJ disease of thinking that all you want to hear about is his life and how great it is. On numerous occasions he mentions the highly desirable Cotswold property he resides in. Now I know that personal experience drives (geddit) his writing but it did sound a bit Chris Moyle's / Chris Evans at times and to be honest call it jealousy but I could have done without it.
Overall this was an enjoyable read and would not stop me getting more of his books as he has written a fair few including a follow up to this one. I would for my next read go for a more car orientated book; after all I do guide the motors category on Dooyoo, as this is the topic he is most passionate about.
The book is published by Penguin; I got mine through a swap on readitswapit however the rrp for the paperback is £6.99 with prices starting on Amazon at a penny in the new and used section rising to £5.39 new. The ISBN is 0-141-01789-9.

Review of The World According to Clarkson - Jeremy Clarkson
Advantages: Humour covering a wide range of subjects. Disadvantages: Some of the topical humour dates quickly.
...people who are interested in the latest developments in cars will know this author, Jeremy Clarkson, from watching his BBC2 programme Top Gear. My only interest in cars is that I like them to get me about in reasonable comfort, so I have only seen snippets of the Top Gear programme when other people in my house have been watching it. Similarly, because of my lack of interest in how cars and other machines work, I haven't read any other of Clarkson's ... ...sometimes unsure if some of the things he wrote were serious, or if it were all in jest. Seeing his deadpan face while he was insulting the live audience didn't help me decide whether he was being deliberately rude or making a joke, but as the audience, including the victims of his jokes, were laughing, I guess they took his ridicule as a good bit of fun.
The BBC web site says that on Top Gear, "Clarkson is more than capable of reducing car manufacturers ...

Advantages: An interesting compelation of his articles from 2001 - 2003 Disadvantages: A few repeated issues and not much structure
Over the last few years or so I have become quite big fan of Top Gear and in particular Jeremy Clarkson. I'd previously read one of his other books, I Know You've Got Soul, so when I came across The World According To Clarkson it was inevitable I was going to read that as well. I've read a number of Clarkson's newspaper columns in the Sun but hadn't really seen much from his days with the Times. This book gave me the opportunity to put that right ... ...Sunday Times articles. The articles cover a period from January 2001 till December 2003, but it isn't every weeks articles. There are massive jumps and in total there are 81 weeks worth of articles in the book and they all cover a vast array of subjects. Now as someone who doesn't regularly read the Sunday Times this was all new to me and in a way was acceptable as original material. If however I'd been a Times reader or if indeed you are then this ...

...has written columns for both the Sunday Times and The Sun. 'The World According To Clarkson' is a collection of his columns from 2001 to 2003. Written for the Sunday Times the book follows Jeremy as he writes from various countries across Europe and the world on subjects that range from the British weather, to why he'd like to be a German, to why he shouldn't be allowed to look after his kids. Clarkson's style of writing is easy to read, at the same ... ...There's a few moments in the book that some people may find controversial. For example, some people may completely disagree with his views of Mandela, but you've got to hand it to the man, he knows what he's talking about and he puts his point across very well without being offensive. Clearly an intelligent man with what I would call a lot of common sense, I found myself agreeing with a lot of the opinions and ideas he presents. I don't know whether ...

...hate him. Personally I think the guy is brilliant and this book shows just how good he can be.
I have been a fan of Clarkson on the TV in his Top Gear role for a long time and I own most of his videos. I was unsure whether his humour would work written in a book becuase his accent on words and his comical deadpan face help. However I was wrong to be worried.
In this book Clarkson covers various subjects with his musings, wild descriptions and strong ... ...very toungue in cheek.
The book is set into short stories which are about 2-3 pages long and take about 5-10 minutes to read so it is easy to pick up and put down without fear of losing the plot of the book. However, I was hooked on this book and couldn't put it down it had me crying with laughter. This book does contain a few references to cars but many more references to non-car related topics. You do not have to be a fan of cars to enjoy this ...

Advantages: very funny book with some strong views Disadvantages: a re-print of articles from the sunday times
Having read his first book 'The WorldAccordingtoClarkson' and being an avid watcher of top gear, I felt obliged to read the second edition of JeremyClarksons book. I found the first book really enjoyable to read and extremely funny in parts and this book is the same. I especially like the fact that because it is simply a culmination of his articles written in his sunday times column, that you can read a few and then put the book down until you feel like going back to it again. I found it a great book to take to work when you have a few spare minutes during you're lunchbreak or something.
The only quite irritating aspect of the book is that he has chosen to write it in a style which could be direct speech. By this I mean that as you read you can almost imagine Clarkson just saying the words and after a while thats exactly what ...
Advantages: Hilarious, Girls can read it too!! Frank! Disadvantages: Not for Piers Morgan fans
Now, I must admit I quite like most books and will give anything the benefit of a few chapters but when I spotted JeremyClarkson's - 'The WorldAccordingtoClarkson Volume Two And Another Thing' lying on my stepdads bedside table I didn't really think a book written by a car fanatic would appeal to me - a female teenager. Open minded I picked up the book knowing if I liked it, it would be read and returned before my stepdad even noticed it had gone.
The book contains a series of short 'stories' or rather 'rants' (as I like to call them) about the world and life from his Sunday times column. The first title, 'I'm a nobody, my jet-set credit card tells me so' baffled me a bit, what a weird title I thought! He must be a bonkers car lover. 10 'rants' later I was well into Clarkson's book and laughing a lot along the way.
The book is ...
Advantages: It can be funny and we know the Clarksons' pocket are being filled Disadvantages: A book about a middle aged man ranting
I am a fan of Jeremyclarkson and admire him as a great television presenter and i vaue his view on cars but when it comes to books... You see I have read books by Jeremyclarkson and they were all well and good and i got a laugh out of them. The first WorldAccordingToClarkson was published in 2004 and it was a compilation of his columns that he wrote for the Sunday Times. It was a very enjoyable read and we got a humurous perspective of JeremyClarkson view of the world and how it sould be run. It was bonkers but relatable and I, as many others, thoroughly enjoyed it. JeremyClarkson sold millions of copes world wide and made a lot of money out of it. So it was fair enough he came out with the sequel which was another huge success but for me, it began to wear. He was for some reason just ranting at petty things which I had no care ...
