About ten years ago my son in law gave me a copy of the PC game ‘Theme Hospital.’
With in a week I was a complete addict; I even used to dream about the darned game!!
Bullfrog Productions started off the whole "Theme" series with a game called ‘Theme Park’, where you built a park adding rides, attractions etc. This game was a great success and they brought out Theme Hospital in 1977. The idea was the same but with a hospital instead of a park – but this hospital is like no other you have ever seen with some very strange and bizarre illnesses and even weirder cures.
The premise is that you are the administrator of a fictional hospital, hiring and training receptionists, doctors, nurses, and handymen to keep the hospital running smoothly. You also have to build rooms like general practice, general diagnostics, pharmacy, ward, operating theatre, scanner, x-ray, etc. as well as staff rooms and toilets. On top of these tasks you also need to sort out loans, research and development, staff polices, education of doctors, handyman priorities, expansion and hospital decoration. Interested? Would you like to hear more?
Game Play
For this I award the game 5/5 The idea of the game is simple – you are the administrator of various hospitals and have to run everything. The game is split into levels,
the main goal in each level is to build a hospital, hire staff, cure patients, and earn lots of money. Each level gets more interesting with more rooms and illnesses available, but it also gets more difficult. Along the way as you struggle to build and maintain your hospital you'll run into many problems including: earthquakes, rat infestations, medical emergencies, health inspectors, infectious diseases, and vomit outbreaks. You will need to hire the skilled staff and the proper facilities to handle these problems. At the same time you need to maintain a good balance between loans, research, training, policies, staff salaries and happiness, and more. You have to make sure to make enough money to expand your hospital. Staff management is one of your main roles; you have to hire doctors that are trained in certain fields to work in different diagnostic or treatment rooms. You are able to click and drag any one of them at anytime placing them where you want, this does speed up the game because the hospital does get quite big and your patients might ‘die’ before the doctor reaches them!! You can not walk away and expect your hospital to run smoothly in your absence, it needs you to be there at all times monitoring everything that happens. As soon as you turn your back an infectious disease could spread through your hospital like wild fire , an earthquake could permanently destroy your machinery or the health inspector could evacuate your hospital.!!
Graphics
For this I award the game 3.5/5 Theme Hospital is an older game and we all know how graphics have improved over the years, so the graphics are not that great when you compare them to games such as Sim City 4, Sim Theme Park, and Rollercoaster Tycoon. The graphics though are fun, especially in dealing with the patients which could be curing a patient with bloated head, rolling someone’s tongue back in their mouth (slack tongue), curing an invisible man, zapping a hairy Big Foot like person or curing baldness. This is no X-Box type graphics – all the doctors, nurses, handymen, and receptionists may look a like. But there are enough different illnesses and diseases that your patient have when they in the door that you won't even notice. If you have any complaints about the graphics, when you see all the funny animations the game has to offer you won't care.
Sound
For this I award the game 3.5/5
The music throughout the game is ok at first however it does become a little annoying after a little while. The music library is not very big and you can manually change songs at anytime. The receptionists in your hospitals plays a key role in the sounds, announcing where your doctors, nurses, and handyman are needed throughout the game. However, these announcements will come on about every 15 seconds, which can be irritating. The regular hospital sounds are the best because there is always something new happening.. What I do love about the sounds are the hilarious regular hospital sounds There are the basic ones like a patient knocking on a door, then there are the funny ones like a patient straining on the loo, a toilet flushing, or the sound of a patient dying and rising to heaven – very entertaining!!
Controls
For this I award the game 5/5
The game menus and options are well put together and are very easy to understand. Building a room is easy, you simply need to point and click, dragging out a blue print, place a door and a few windows, add room objects of your choice and then click done. The room is instantly open for your patients to use. All of the sub-menus are easy to work out – you can research different things, arrange loans and repayments, sort out staff happiness etc. The game play in this game is so easy, even an 8 year old could master Theme Hospital
Conclusion & Replay Value
For this I award the game 5/5 Bullfrog Productions have made a great game, with Theme Hospital. It is original, addictive and full of fun. The characters, patient problems, treatment rooms and more are so much fun. All in all, this game is great all around. Be warned though, you will be addicted from the start and wanting more. Each new level offers enough new illnesses and rooms to build that you will be finding yourself playing more and more. I have managed to complete the whole game, but keep starting again!!!
