Reginald Hill back on form

Advantages: Well-written, strong characters
Disadvantages: A bit too long

Introduction I have to admit that the latest Dalziel and Pascoe books that I've read have not particularly impressed me. I thought 'Arms and the Women' was one of the worst books I have read for a long time and 'Dialogues of the Dead', although better, was so complex that I just gave up trying to understand after a while. So I wasn't really expecting this book to be much better. Luckily, I was surprised and Reginald Hill has come up with a plot much more of a standard with his earlier novels. The author Reginald Hill now lives in Cumbria, although he has spent part of his life in Yorkshire, where the Dalziel and Pascoe books are based. Good Morning, Midnight is the twentieth book featuring Dalziel and Pascoe, who first appeared in 'A Clubbable Woman' in 1970. Hill has also written a series of books featuring Joe Sixsmith, a West ...

Review of Good Morning, Midnight - Reginald Hill

There are ghosts, both seen and unseen, in all of us.

Advantages: An incredible WW1 story, inspiring and thought provoking.
Disadvantages: The third book of a trilogy - should be read in order

'My subject is war, and the pity of war. The Poetry is in the pity.' Wilfred Owen Pat Barker is a writer and historian. She published her first novel, Union Street, in 1982 but is best known for her First World War series, the Regeneration trilogy, a fictional account of the wartime experiences of the poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, the psychiatrist W. H. R. Rivers, and the fictional , Lt. Billy Prior. The final book in the trilogy is The Ghost Road. I personally believe that each volume of theTrilogy needs to be read in order (REGENERATION, THE EYE IN THE DOOR and THE GHOST ROAD) Although the plot is re-summarized at the beginning of each book, the main characters one based on fact (Rivers), one totally fictional (Prior). are continually being developed throughout them and they really ...

COFFEE UNION - NO WONDER THE UNIONS ARE FAILING

Advantages: NONE
Disadvantages: FOOD, COFFEE SERVICE

similar to warm yaks milk (forgive the poetic licence). Upon bringing this up with the maker of the drink, I was told that they no longer put the shot of coffee in the latte although she did assure me it had ice in it (obviously global warming did for my ice whilst it was being handed to me). They did agree to put in the shot of coffe but told me in future it would be the powder only (don't mind if there is enough of the stuff in the drink) but if I wanted the shot there would be the obligitory additional charge. Needless to say, looks like I will now forego my pleasurable lunch-time pick-me-up. Overall the Coffe Union gives the impression that as you are somewhat stranded and reliant on them for food (especially in bad weather) it does not matter what service/provisions they give you. There are rumours of another food provider opening up ...
