These is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 - Nancy Turner

Inspired by stories of her great-grandmother, who retired from running a cattle ranch at ... more

the age of 85, Nancy Turner's debut novel tells
the story of Sarah Prine, pioneer  woman and
settler of America's western frontier. Sarah
begins her diary in 1881, when at the  age of 18,
her family begins their arduous journey from the
dry, dusty heat of Arizona to the  greener
pastures of Texas. The wagon trail meets danger at
every step; rattlesnakes and  Indian attacks rip
out the heart of Sarah's world. Yet she proves
herself strong and faithful,  and in times of
greatest trouble her family turn to her for
support--both physical and  emotional.   A woman
for our times, Sarah learns to live her own life,
loved and respected as rancher,  mother and free
spirit. These Is My Words captures the harsh,
unforgiving landscape  of the American West at one
of the most devastating periods in that country's
history. Mixing  politics and social commentary
with the compelling tale of a feisty young woman
and her  desire for knowledge, fairness and grand
passion, Nancy Turner has written an outstanding
debut novel that is sure to become a 20th-century
classic. --Carey Green

AdvantagesReally good story and believable characters

DisadvantagesNone in my view

"...full of books and uses these to improve her writing. We see this as the book progresses her writing becomes more educated and her grammar improves. She is a strange mixture of older than her years and tough while at the same time she has this rather naÔve charm. She doesnít seem to notice when she is the target of a handsome young manís attention and finds him rather tiresome.Along the way families lose children, husbands, wives ..." Read review

These is My Words - An unforgettable story of time and place

AdvantagesUnputdownable and the author is working on a fourth

DisadvantagesIt eventually comes to an end

"...written for young people whereas These is My Words is most definitely for grown-ups who prefer true-grit and a dose of real life in their stories. Sarah is about 17 when she starts her journal in July 1881, when she and her family set off from their farmhouse in the Arizona territories and point the front of their wagon to head towards the Rio Grande by way of Texas. Life was hard for everyone then, particularly women burdened with the ..." Read review

A light read, likeable characters,
A bit predictable (*)
Wonderfully written, easy and quick to read
Other than the obviously sad subject nature - none (*)

slow to begin with, couldn't relate to the character 100% (but that's not the books fault) (*)
A closely-plotted detective story and coming-of-age novel.
