I came across this bargain refurbished model for only £300. The RAM had been upgraded to 1GB and the processor now clocks at 1.8ghz. It also came with Windows XP Pro instead of Home and still had a years warranty left. After reading reviews on the net I realised that I had indeed came across a bargain, as it was rated highly by many and also cost as much as £1500 new just three years ago!
Upon setting up the laptop I noticed how sturdy it felt on the outside. The hinge still felt stiff and it felt well built. I did manage to snap a little bit of the corner casing off when I got it tangled on my duvet cover as it was sitting on the bed once, but that's only a cosmetic problem which was my fault and not the laptops. Other than that, its build is fine. Its keys are great to type on and are the closest I've felt to a regular PC keyboard on a laptop. It comes with both a track point (central red pivot thing) and a touch pad. I prefer the touch pad; it is perfectly responsive and smooth.
The laptop is very quiet in use and you can only hear the fan when it overheats or when the DVD drive starts. The drive ejects as if it is on a catch which feels flimsy but is needed to keep it compactly tucked away. I have had no issues with hard drive clicking but wouldn't be off put if I did as long as the machine is working fine. If you drop it by accident, the drive automatically stops spinning to protect data, which is useful if you're moving it about.
The speed of the system is smooth and quite capable of many day to day things and even some games. I have Colin McRae 3 running fine and my PlayStation emulator running smoothly. The graphics card has its own memory which helps the whole systems stability. I think it is something like an ATI RADEON MOBILITY (can't remember which number) and has 32mb of memory. DVD's are actually good quality and not even grainy using WinDVD that comes with it.
The sound is tinny through the speakers but kicks a good punch through an external amplifier. It's just a basic SoundMAX though, so I use an external sound card. This takes up one of the only 2 USB ports: they could have been more. They are always full what with my mobile broadband modem or my external drive. I need one of those due to the small drive, but that's no problem.
Battery life is fairly rubbish but then again so are all laptops. It's adequate for a few hours but I wouldn't rely on the battery and I always make sure there's a plug near by. Speaking of adaptors: the design may look sturdy (of the adaptor itself) but there's a thing piece of wire which can break. I've had to replace the adaptor already but luckily things are readily available for IBM products.
The screen is an adequate size but the resolution could maybe be slightly higher as you can't get much on to the screen. When you've been working on a larger monitor based PC, everything seems huge! You could always connect 2 monitors if you needed more workspace I suppose. It is bright however and doesn't fade that much if you tilt it (at least no more than any other). It's highest resolution is 1024 x 768.
I think this is a great laptop. I would recommend looking for a second hand one of these rather than falling for the cheap supermarket high spec laptop thing. High spec yes. High build no. Where are all the parts when you need them? IBM is a well supported brand and the T42 Thinkpad is a popular model. I can see why.
Advantages: Slim, very light, IBM cachet, good screen, fantastic keyboard Disadvantages: Build quality perhaps, ticking hard drive
OK, as I write this, the T42 already has its successors in the T43 and T60 which are in all likelihood higher spec machines, but the T42 has a lot of bang for the money.
First off, as a normal user, the 1.7GHz P-M processor is more than adequate, being equivalent to something close to the Pentium 4 3.0GHz and therefore on par with the desktops of the common people. Being an IBM, you may also choose to have a port replicator which would allow you ... ...having to worry about connecting wires etc and you can enjoy more "desktop-like" features, such as possibly a bigger screen, a mouse etc. Amongst other good features, you enjoy a 512MB in-built DDR memory, which is enough for most daily uses and can be upgraded to a whopping 2GB. The only gripe I have with this is that to get to 2GB would entail having 2 x 1GB memory sticks and it's not very easy to take out the original 512MB. I haven't tried it, ...

Right, where do i start? This is a work laptop, and we install our own build onto them, so if your look for information on software that comes with them, I'm afraid I'm going to dissapoint you.
From opening the box, you don't really find much! the laptop, a battery, a power charger, some paperwork and errr... Some packing foam!
We get them in bundles with laptop bags, another charger, a port replicator, keyboard and mouse. I'm sure ... ...without too much trouble.
The laptop itself is not overly light, but not too much of a brick either. I normally carry it around in a rucksack, and it never really bothers me.
It has the Pentium M processor. It varies it's speed depending on demand on the processor, and if the laptop is on battery or mains power. This does make the battery life last a fair bit longer, and depending on what work I'm doing i can get between 2 and 3 hours battery life ...

Advantages: Reliable, Well Made, Great features Disadvantages: Older technology
I got my self a T42 to use a laptop for university, something that I could take to lectures and also use back at my house. I couldn't have made a Better Purchase I paid around £800 for mine around a year ago, and it has been worth every penny. Not only is it a reliable chipset it also comes with great support from the IBM Website with updates and new software, programs and Bios updates, all to improve usability.
I have not yet had any thing break ... ...generation of laptop but a safe buy second hand as it seems to be indestructible I have dropped bashed and spilled things over and still no problems. The Pentium M processor has given me fast enough capabilities. I use the laptop for all my courses with some very high processing intensive programs and it keeps up. As I am writing this review I am using the T42 while running flash MX, mozilla firefox, itunes and msn, Dreamweaver and a few other programs ...

Nice machine, the model i have it comes with Multiburner and I upgraded to1Gb ram. Good video card, it comes with lots of utility for configuration and drivers can be automatically downloaded from the web.And so far the good points...bad notes now..I had hard disk replaced twice in first 6 months of life.First hard disk start doing tick tick noises, then machines goes blue screen, then it hangs on boot...with no error on display and you can still ... ...flickers.I called support and they made me download a Drive fitness test that reported an error on disk.Had to take machine to a Service point to have it swapped under warranty .Two moinths later, the new hard disk failed again, and was replaced..now i work with my finger crossed and save every important doc on DVD. Speaking with the people of the Service center , it looks like it is a common problem happening to machines built in 2005.. ...

This has been my handy & beloved companion & lasted me throughout my University years. I used it mostly for accessing the Internet & using Office applications. I kept a lot of photos on this computer. I also downloaded about 2000 songs & used it as a music player & a few times as a DVD player for my rented movies.
It is fairly lightweight & just small enough to fit in an ordinary sized rucksack, so perfect for commuters or anyone doing work on the ... ...so it came in useful. It is also quite durable; I have dropped it & knocked it a few times (being clumsy n all) yet it has survived well with no screen problems etc. One of the downfalls is that it gets dirty very easily & despite being black, the dust & greasemarks show up blatantly. My computer came with a laptop bag, which has several pockets for charger, CD ROMs & extra devices. It is quite thick & a little heavy, but keeps everything very safe ...
