Most people are aquainted with Ben Elton on Saturday Night Live, and his rambling, fast paced stand-up. His books are similar in that in places he goes off in a tangent, but it adds to the story rather than detracts.
This Other Eden is set in the future where the air is unbreathable in big cities and the ozone layer has disintegrated to the point that people go and have their pores blocked in able to walk the streets, the big cities all operate at night to save their inhabitants and the world has gone mad. Television programmes are now the interludes interrupting adverts, and advertising is the new global superpower. The book operates on several levels, you have the earths story, how the human race is crippling it, and the people trying to stop it, and people who seem to be aiding Earths Death. The average man is in a quandry, does he put his money and effort into helping what seems a lost cause, or does he invest in a claustrosphere, a self contained unit designed to support life while the Earth dies. The characters are rounded and likeable and detestable, and the reader becomes involved in this crazy world, and at the back of the mind there is this nagging thought - is this the future? No far-fetched laser guns or aliens, just humans hell-bent on making money, well some of them. With anti-earth death action groups, a norse God-like figure, a murder, the FBI, and spray on condoms, what more could you ask for on a quiet night? Ben Elton at his best before commercialism swallowed him whole and he lost the edge that makes him so very funny in this book.
Advantages: a compelling read. Disadvantages: none
This other eden is one of Ben Elton's older novels, and it was written , in my opinion when he was at his best. It was compelling and thought provoking, with Elton tackling th etopic of the World and how to save it in his own unique way. His tallent for writing chronic page turners is found here more than ever, so dont expect to get much done after you pick this book up. It is a very good book for these long winter nights!!
Also worth bearing in ...

This book is a must read for fans of Ben Elton's writing. From the hollywood star to the scandanavian adonis this book is full of strong characters and intreguing twists. Elton's characteristic ecological view of the world is present in its entirity but is not forced upon you and does not distract you from the books humour. Having read all but one of Elton's novels (Stark being the odd one out) I can safely say that in my mind this is the best. I ...

Advantages: Stand up comedy in a book Disadvantages: Better pot from Elton but the ending...
...what do you get from this Ben Elton novel? Like every other there is political correctness, stand-up observational humour splattered throughout liberally (sic), and this time a pretty decent plot too. Okay so it’s not earth shattering or going to win the Nobel Prize for Plot Complexity but it’s way better than Gridlock and adds to the enjoyment.
Nathan is a British writer and has written what he wants to be a blockbuster movie. Only problem is someone ... ...to stay alive to make it. The earth in on the brink of environmental disaster and for the Eco-terrorists, Mother Earth, it is their opportunity to blow up things and say how awful things are, whilst for Jurgen Thor it is the opportunity to sell Claustrospheres (a survival chamber for those rich enough to afford it when the Earth finally dies).
Gone is the huge print of Gridlock to pad out the book and back is the small print of Stark, required to ...

I?ve been a BenElton fan ever since an ex-girlfriend of mine found ?ThisOtherEden? lying around on a train ages ago. Just to clarify - the book was lying around, she wasn?t.
Although this particular book ?Blast From The Past? didn?t have me in hysterics as much as some of his other novels, its still got quite a few laughs up its sleeves.
The plot itself is a little more sinister as compared to his previous books, but I feel that it?s a bit unfair for me to say too much about the story. I?ll only spoil it, so I?ll just note the main jist of the story instead.
The theme focuses on the main character (as you would expect) called Polly. Polly is a pretty liberal minded government worker that lives alone in a flat.
Years ago, she had a bit of a fling with a now very highly ranking American military officer that decided to ...
In this novel, Elton returns to his favourite theme of the threatened environment. If the end of the world is nigh, then surely it's only sensible to make alternative arrangements. Certainly the Earth has its good points, but what most people need is something smaller and more manageable. See all Product Description
