Limited lifespan
Advantages Good initial effect
Disadvantages Relatively short life-span
In my experience the lifespan of Thompson's Waterseal is limited to two or three years. However, the initial results are very good, with water-repellency on most substrates being achieved almost immediately.
I have been told that the lifespan is limited because the waterproof resins are broken down by ultra violet light in the sun's rays. It is therefore better to use a product that contains a siloxane (especially when treating masonry) as these can last up to 20 years. For wood and canvas, however, Waterseal should be fine, as you would not expect such a long life anyway. If you are only wanting a few years protection, go for Waterseal. If you want long-term protection and don't want to keep re-applying, then go for a more expensive product containing a siloxane.
