This modem is powered by your computer via a USB connection which means that a spare mains power socket will not be required. However, for your computer to provide enough power to the modem it needs a 400W PSU (Power Supply Unit) which can be a problem. I tried using it with my 800MHz computer which had a 300W PSU and it simply didn't work. A possible solution might be to use a mains powered USB hub as a device to connect the computer and the modem together. I have not tried this idea but theoretically the modem should draw enough power from the USB hub.
I've heard that the quality of the broadband connection can degrade if a telephone cable extension is used. There has been no problems with my connection when using a cable extension which is good.
Overall, I think this modem is good apart from the fact you may have problems using it with older computers which have less powerful power supply units. Although, the Speedtouch 330 instruction booklet and their website isn't particularly good particular at troubleshooting problems. A lot of broadband users use this modem and you can find the solution to most problems in the forums such as Vnunet or just by doing a search in Google. They do have a technical support helpline which charges you 50p per minute. However, I can't comment on how good their helpline is because I haven't tried calling them before.
Advantages: Cheap, good connection, stylish Disadvantages: No extra features
I received the Speedtouch 330 USB when signing up for my first ADSL connection free of charge. The ISP claimed it cost about £40 and I got it free because I tied into a year's contract which is fine by me because they also waived my connection fee (£60 or so)

After much playing with the micro filters that come in the box (2 provided) and cables I finally managed to get a green light on the ADSL which doesn't mean its connected to the internet merely a "ADSL dial tone" is received which means you are able to connect. After entering my details in the provided dial up connection by Speedtouch I was away and connected at 2.2Mbps. The actual diagnostics tool ...

Advantages: Reliable, Easy Installation, Versatile, Excellent Value Disadvantages: None
I have now had the pleasure of owning a SpeedTouch 330 USB external ADSL modem for around a year. Throughout this period I have had no problems whatsoever - it has been one of the best pieces of computer hardware I have ever come across. As someone who builds and repairs computers I am well aware that some of its competitors are much more problematical.
The SpeedTouch 330 Modem:
Supports Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, ME and XP, Mac OS 8.6, 9 and ... ...connection to computer (also compatible with USB 2). Can easily be moved between different computers if necessary.
No power adapters or other power supply needed.
Installation is straightforward and should be well within the scope of most beginners. A Quick Installation Guide and CD containing more detailed installation information and drivers is also included.
The appearance of the SpeedTouch 330 is more attractive than some ...

This modem was sent to me by Wanadoo when I first changed to broadband four years ago.
It connects via usb which is what I wanted because my pc at the time did not have an ethernet socket.
It is silver and looks ok, somewhat like a large mouse, the computer kind not the sort my cat brings in.
I had to install it using a cd sent by Wanadoo and follow the instructions not to plug it in until the drivers were installed.
Once installed you have to ... ...password to connect to the internet.
I was somewhat confused with all this, I had always thought broadband meant it was on all the time. Well not with this modem, every time you want to use the internet you have to go through the same routine, which probably only takes a few seconds but is annoying all the same.
In its favour, it was reliable and was still working four years later when I changed my provider and got an ethernet modem, I had a new ...

Advantages: Very easy to install, Realiable Disadvantages: Unusual Design
I recevied this modem for free as part of signing up to Virgin broadband through my BT line. It comes in a small box along with the driver dc,filter for the phone line, instruction manual, the phone cable and the unit itself.
In order to install this your pc must have a usb port and a cd drive as you need to install the driver. The easiest way to install it is to first of all install the software driver which you can do very easily by simply inserting ... ...It takes a few minutes to install the software and then it will prompt you to connect the modem to your pc by USB. Once you've done this,it will set it up automatically for you and then it will create a shortcut on your desktop. At this point you are almost done, just make sure you have connected the modem and the filter correctly.
Once this has been completed, simply enter your username and password and then you are connected to the net via broadband!.

Advantages: Fast, Low cost, reliable Disadvantages: Can't support a network well
The Thomson SpeedTouch 330 is a reliable, low cost modem. We received the modem free when we signed up for a broadband package only a few months ago. Ever since, it has kept us continually online, but with a few moments when it has connectivity problems, like any other modem.
--- PRICE ---
The modem comes at a very reasonable price, usually around £25. It comes free with many packages, too. Included is the modem, setup CD, guide to installation, ... ...you to use your phone line for the internet and phone at the same time.
--- DESIGN ---
The SpeedTouch modem comes in a range of different colours. Ours came in silver, the default colour. As you can tell from the picture, you can also find it in other colours, including purple, but this is harder to find. It is small, and will fit into a small place in your office, and you can hardly notice it. It is smooth, with rounded edges.
