A FAIR TRIAL .... WITHOUT A BODY?
Advantages: Chilling, gripping, compelling tale Disadvantages: All the characters smoke excessively!
~~~INTRODUCTION~~~
I buy a lot of books from charity shops - after all they're cheap, accessible, tend to have an impressive range of genres available and at the same time you're supporting a good cause in a way that offers a benefit to you as well as the organisation concerned. I found myself in the local Oxfam shop a couple of months ago. Recently refurbished, it holds a remarkable collection of books, organised by author making it easy to see ... ...and sometimes when you've read a few books by an individual author in quick succession there's a danger of becoming bored with their style, tone or formulaic approach to writing. Nothing could be further from the truth in this case!
~~~THE AUTHOR~~~

Deep Black - Into the Psychological Area
Advantages: Great insight into the mind of soldiers! Disadvantages: Can be slightly boring in parts...(like most books!)
Andy McNabs Deep Black is unlike his normal books, taking you into several cities it tells you the story of a man, his friend and their past. Nick Stone is the main character and McNab makes sure you know every nut and cranny about this guy, he takes you right into the heart of the character. Obviously im not going to ruin the book and tell you about him or his past, but you can tell that McNab has been to war and knows exactly how it feels.
Taking ...

Prepare to be moved.
Advantages: A great read, but not a 'typical' Grisham. Disadvantages: Ending was not as strong as it could have been, biut it didn't matter.
Having read a number of John Grisham's books, this one came as a complete surprise, and a very pleasant one at that!
It reminded me of Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath', but was more readable and faster moving.
It is the story of two families coming together during the depression in the United States. One family run a cotton farm at harvest time and the other family are hill people who are vital to the economy, yet are treated with prejudice by ... ...a group of mexicans, who, like the hill people, are brought in to harvest the cotton before the weather breaks.
Grisham's sympathetic writing is superb. One could almost share the fear and sadness felt by some of the main characters. In this respect, the book is a real page-turner.
Grisham deals with all the social issues remarkably well. These issues include racism, prejudice, poverty, disability, violence and the plight of unmarried teenage mothers.

A Good Day to Die. Couldn't put it down!
Advantages: Readabilty, up to date and believable Disadvantages: Some people might not like the first person narrative
...who works part time as a hit man to rid the streets of those criminals that the law seems unable to touch. After he is conned into carrying out a hit on three innocent men he goes on to get his revenge, but ends up having to flee the country and change his identity, ending up in the Phillipines which is where "A Good Day to Die" kicks off"
Money tempts him back into his previous trade, but he soon realises that he is being used again by the same ... ...through the cities less salubrious areas to search out those responsible.
It's a fast moving all action read written in the first person which with some authors doesn't really come off. However Kernicks character is very believable and human, a change from some of subjects of other crime fiction ...
