Fire and brimstone
Review of The Brimstone Wedding - Barbara Vine by sunmeilan

Advantages: Really compelling story
Disadvantages: A bit slow in the middle

...Stella comes to stay at the old people's home where Jenny works, she immediately becomes a favourite of Jenny's. Jenny senses in her a kindred spirit, and as time progresses, it soon becomes clear that they do have something in common - they have both had affairs with married men. Jenny's is still on-going, although she is married herself, but Stella's ended many years before, seemingly in tragedy and with someone's death. Then Stella hands Jenny ...
...tryst. Will Jenny pluck up the courage to leave her husband for her lover? And will she find out about Stella's own tragic love story? Barbara Vine, the author of this book, is a psedonym for Ruth Rendell, well-known for her Wexford mysteries. As Barbara Vine, her books tend to have a more mysterious aura - this one, for example, delves into mysticism and charms - and they tend to be more psychological, so that, although this is still a mystery, ... And You Thought Your Mother-in-Law was Bad!
Review of The Little House - Philippa Gregory by DoubleFantasy11

Advantages: Terrifying, good characters and story
Disadvantages: Bad writing, disappointing

...Gregory book I've read and The Little House is no exception, despite not being the best example of her writing. The plot, themes and characters are all good, but cannot be realised through the poor writing style as effectively as they would have been if Gregory had written it ten years later, after gaining experience and improving her writing. At times, I felt like taking a black pen and blotting out all of the unnecessary adjectives and superfluous ...
...Patrick, also working in the media and slightly more well-known. Every Sunday they travel from Bristol to Bath to spend the day with Patrick's parents, Elizabeth and Frederick. They are old-fashioned, very middle class and think nothing of telling their adult son how to live his life. Elizabeth believes women ought to be wives and mothers, instead of opting for a career. Frederick thinks the apartheid in South Africa, where he worked for a time, ... Read review

Crime in Question
Review of Crime in Question - Margaret Yorke by CPTDANIELS

Advantages: Great read full of surprises
Disadvantages: No epilogy

...concern seeing this as a crime that will harm no-one. However, he does not really know Len and he starts a chain of events that will change and affect several other of the inhabitants of Coxton and ultimately ends up in murder. My thoughts on the book: I expected a thought provoking, enjoyable and interesting read and that is exactly what I got. This was a very good book which I read over the course of a weekend. Once I picked it up I was glued ...
...I had finished it. I would describe myself as an experienced reader of Yorke's novels. For me she is a talented but at the same time very down to earth writer. She writes uncomplicated plots dealing with normal everyday people in everyday situations. The books are not high tec action types, more simple stories about people like you and me, but full of suspense and surprises. As previously mentioned I was afraid I had already read the book and that ... Read review

A natural Bourne thriller!
Review of The Bourne Identity - Robert Ludlum by wolfatgoogle

Advantages: Exciting, fast paced thriller - better than the film
Disadvantages: Wrong cover picture, possibly my fault - sorry!

I recently watched the movie of the same name. Although I enjoyed the movie, and it is a good action film, I was disappointed as I remembered reading this book a long time ago. There is so much more in the books, and the movie is really only based on an initial premise from the book. I will however be interested to see what they have done with the next two films, because they have left themselves unable to use the following books due to critical ...
...the same situation as the movie - a man is found barely alive, floating on some debris in the Mediterranean. Aside from his other injuries, it is clear that he has been shot.. The fishermen who found him take him to a doctor at the village of Port Noir, This doctor does little other medical work now, due to being a drunk. He does admit to this, and has little in his life that makes him feel the need to stop drinking. What this does mean, is that ... Read review
