Not his best... but still worth the effort
Review of The House of Thunder - Dean Koontz by Victoria_R

Advantages: You can't see where the next blow is coming from
Disadvantages: Possibly the ending. Sorry, did I mention that already..??

...to Ciao for giving me the encouragment to read a lot of my old Dean Koontz books again so that I can review them. I'd forgotten just how good most of them are. The House of Thunder is a strange book. At the beginning the suspense nearly kills you, then the end is just a little too neat for my liking. A minor criticism, I know, but it seems a shame to waste all the hard work that has been put into the rest of the book with a really tidy ending. Don't ...
...my ramblings - on to the plot! Susan Thornton's (Jewish) boyfriend is killed in a college hazing, in a cave known as the "house of thunder", by four bigoted thugs. Four years later, all those who participated in the murder are also dead in violent circumstances. Susan rebuilds her life and becomes successful. TWELVE years later, she wakes up in hospital suffering from amnesia after apparently being involved in a serious road accident. OK so far. ... Read review

Terrible, Terrible stuff
Review of The Voice of the Night - Dean Koontz by grohloholic

Advantages: Some people prefer Koontz stories with no supernatural aspects..this is one of them.
Disadvantages: Terrible story, no suspense..too many.

...I've read are brilliant, at the very least good. This however, is just awful. The description on the back of the book implied that the book was about, as the title would suggest, the voices of the night. I therefore imagined a supernatural thriller and it did sound interesting. However, the "voice of the night" is mentioned just twice in this book, very briefly. It is not a big part of the story and in fact, there is nothing supernatural in the book. ...
...happens to be one of the worst books I've ever read. The fact that it is easy to read is another advantage..but that is just not good enough for me. The main 2 characters are 14 year old Colin and Roy. Colin is new in town and has never had friends until Roy. He is therefore willing to do anything to keep Roy's companionship. However, Roy has a secret and is constantly trying to let Colin in on it.. the secret being that he likes to kill things. ... Read review

Religion for a different point of view
Review of Whit - Iain Banks by Jonny5sk

Advantages: Interesting points on religion and an outside in view
Disadvantages: Some character scenes were short just when you start to know them

...Gaia-Marie Isis Saraswati Minerva Mirza Whit of Luskentyre, Beloved Elect of God III. But in this case she's called Is for short. She is sent on a mission to find her cousin Morag and bring her back to the community before Luskentyrian Festival of Love, held 9 months prior to 29th of Feb, hence the term Leapyearians, that which is Isis. When she goes on her pilgrimage, she meets people outside her community, also known as the unsaved. And so begins ...
...South of England. The main thing I love about this book is how amazed the main character Isis is of all technology and people around her outside her community. Think of it in the perspective as an Amish person, leaving their community and going on a pilgrimage, this pretty much runs under the same lines, but you see everything from Amish side. The story is straight forward; it's about a pilgrimage all taken from the view point of Isis. And that's ... Read review

Another gripping book by Michael Crichton
Review of Prey - Michael Crichton by mario_s

Advantages: A brilliant book after the initial confusingness at begining
Disadvantages: takes a good 100 pages to get into...

Michael Chrichton has done it again. Another outstanding book and if you loved other books by him such as the sphere you will certainly love this book too. Again like all his books you start reading only to find yourself confused for the first one hundred pages, for most people this would put them of, however like all his books once you have overcomed this initial part of the book everything starts to make sence and you can REALY start enjoying this ...
...reader could pick up this book and thoroughly enjoy it. Those who would especialy enjoy this book would be people who enjoy a bit of action and suspence that can get quite unrealistic at times though even though it is this unrealisticness that makes any book with suspence or action good anyway. However do not be fooled though this isnt just an all action book as it has a lot of substance behind it. A must read for any Michael Chrichton or action ... Read review
