The First Book

Advantages: good language & length, excitingly well-written
Disadvantages: none

This review is not about the story . It is about the book. Graham Greene's Third Man is one of the true classics in literature. Vienna in the 1930s/40s as you had always imagined it. In the middle of the scene: Rollo Martin and his friend Harry Limes about whom Rollo has some suspicion… Telling more would spoil the joy of reading - and the book is enjoyable from beginnign to end. Greene always had a style of writing which is easy to read and good ...
...story. What I liked about the book: the story, of course, the way the characters are described and evolve. The length is ideal, the languagge excellent. For me it was especially interesting as there are a lot of bits and pieces embedded in the story from the period of time the book plays in. The end of the book is famous - a lot of credit has to be given to the film. The excellent black and white picture starring Orson Welles is "the" interpretation ...

Doctor Fischer, I presume...

Advantages: It sets the standard.
Disadvantages: Try to read it as slowly as possible so it's not over too soon.

Doctor Fischer of Geneva is a toothpaste millionaire. He invented “Dentophil Bouquet” which claims to keep at bay the particular infections that are caused by eating chocolate. Doctor Fisher of Geneva lives in a classical white mansion on the lakeside at Versoix with his beautiful daughter Anna-Luise. Anna-Luise thinks of her pink and white bedroom as being “like a wedding cake.” Doctor Fisher of Geneva holds infamous dinner parties. Doctor Fisher’s ...
...official Graham Greene town. Doctor Fisher of Geneva lives a couple of miles away. He’s not considered “respectable” Graham Greene – he’s dirty Graham Greene; he’s second cousin twice removed Graham Greene. If I told you that the sub-title of this wonderful novella is “The Bomb Party” could we all safely agree that we are in Gothic territory here? ***************************************************** A one-handed translator called Jones lives ...

...End of the Affair and Brighton Rock, but also as a playwright and Journalist, even spending some time as a respected critic. A keen traveller, Greene spent as much time as possible touring Europe and later further a field, however, his youth was plagued with depression, accumulating in several suicide attempts and eventually extensive psychoanalysis. A powerful and glorious novel!

Advantages: A great exploration of religion
Disadvantages: Perhaps not for everyone

...authors ever since I read The Heart of the Matter earlier this year, and The Power and the Glory did not disappoint. I have to admit that during the first couple of chapters I felt a little confused about what the author was trying to do, but the more I read on, the more this became apparent. Graham Greene wrote this novel after a visit to Mexico, where he witnessed the religious persecution that was occurring there. The story tells of a defiant ...
...outlawed by the government. He is a ‘bad’ priest – what is called a “whisky priest” in the novel – who has an addiction to alcohol and has fathered an illegitimate child; however, despite this apparent lack of piety, it is his capacity to love that is his redemption. He embarks on a journey, which becomes a journey of spiritual discovery for him, pursued by a police lieutenant whose extreme atheism makes him strive for a world free of religion (he ...
