A chain is only as strong as its weakest link
Review of The Street Lawyer - John Grisham by
Whizzdom
Advantages: a brilliant story, the kind which perhaps society as a whole should study at school level.
Disadvantages: none at all.
This book opens up at the journey of a person on his way to work who is portrayed as being, a young, professional person in a fairly comfortable job with certain expectations for himself, life and society.
On entering his workplace, he finds himself accompanied in the lift, by a foul-smelling black person who looks entirely out of his element because of his apparent lack of money, that which the main character seem to ooze with such implied ease. ... ...us to assume that the protagonist is probably white. These might appear small, trivial aspects of the book, but the concept of oppression looms larger further on in the book, as it points to comparative scales of oppression among classes, races, and social standing in modern day America.
It turns out that the foul smelling person, a man who later accepts the term of "Mister" as a name, has planned to blow up all the main partners in the legal firm ...

Fiction not Fact
Review of The Innocent Man - John Grisham by
TheWizardsSleeve
Advantages: reads like a book of fiction, great but harrowing story, compelling throughout
Disadvantages: predictable ending given the true story nature, author takes liberties with the truth
...a Grisham fan and in the early days used to positively drool awaiting the next book. However, I began to lose interest after A Painted House and since The King of Torts, whilst passable, I do not think any of his books have been anything special. In fact the last 4/5 novels merge into one and I cannot remember individual story lines. You cannot say that about The Firm or A Time To Kill. It was with a little bit of uncertainty, therefore, that I recently ... ...a non fiction book and the write up also captured my imagination. Well, I must say that I was absolutely hypnotized and read this book in one sitting. I have no idea how long it took and have no concept of time as I was captivated with the book. This is Grisham's first attempt at non fiction and overall he has been successful by largely following the same formula used for his works of fiction ie, little characterisation but built around tremendous ...

Get A Pizza The Action
Review of Playing for Pizza - John Grisham by
scampi1
Advantages: A pleasant easy reading book.
Disadvantages: Not Grishams strength, ie it's not a legal thriller with courtroom brawling.
It's been a while but I've finally found the mojo to rustle up a review, so here goes.
Rick Dockery, third choice quarterback for the Cleveland Browns American football team, wakes up in a hospital bed and he doesn't know how he got there, or more importantly why he's there. It's only when Arnie, his agent and one and only visitor, begins to fill in the blanks that the seriousness of his situation hits home.
In the space of eleven minutes Rick ... ...world. To say he had a 'shocker' of a game would be an understatement. Add a severe concussion to the mix, along with the general all round battering he received and Rick begins to think his day can't get any worse. However, it does, as Arnie informs Rick that he's been fired by the Cleveland Browns, and that no other team in North America will touch him with the proverbial bargepole following his recent catastrophic performance.
