Advantages: Wide array of features - gear stick, paddles, force feedback, brake and accelerator peddles Disadvantages: Can be time consuming to set up, compatibility problems on dated systems/games
Steering wheels are the ultimate accessory for any racing game enthusiast. Unfortunately they can also be a real pain to set up. I got this wheel two years ago to use with some of the rally and formula 1 racing games that I own.
Performance wise its the best wheel I've ever used. It has very responsive pedals and good powerful forcefeedback from the wheel (it has its own power supply for feedback). Also if you're into gear changing then there's the option of either the gearstick or gear-shift paddles behind the wheel. Personally I found the gearstick a bit awkward to use on games but the paddles behind the wheel are really comfortable and easy to use.
The main problem I have found with this game is compatibility although these problems may only be unique to my system ( a Win 98 pII 400mhz ). I was generally able to get the wheel ...
Advantages: 900° rotation, superb force feedback, lots of buttons Disadvantages: consumes lots of desk space, pricey
The Logitech Driving ForcePro, was, until recently when the Logitech G25 came along, quite simply the daddy of all steering wheels. The flagship of Logitech's wheel range it boasted an array of features that would probably even set Schumacher's hands trembling!
When the DFP was released, it was something of a pioneer, for nearly a decade, mainstream computer wheels had really only offered a glimpse of the reality of driving a car; Their wheel designs were obscure, their buttons were too few and their ergonomics were questionable. By far and away the main issue however, was the degree of rotation offered. While this all might sound overtly technical and nit-picky, the reality was that up until the DFP every single wheel out there had a half turn lock-to-lock. Again, if i'm loosing you here in technical jargon, think of it in your ...
Advantages: Very strong, easy to setup, makes driving games far more realistic. Disadvantages: Not cheap, yet another plug socket required.
One-style ‘gear-shift’ buttons on the back of the wheel. All are micro switched and respond with a satisfying click. The steering wheel unit has a very strong dual clamp system to sit in firmly on most desks without slipping. The two pedals are mounted on a plastic board with a textured surface to provide grip. The whole unit connects to a standard joystick port, and also requires a mains connection.
The forcefeedback unit applies appropriate force to the rotation of the steering wheel. A variety of effects are simulated, including slippery surfaces (wheel becomes loose), crashes (wheel jerks and jumps wildly) kerbs, engine noise and bumps (wheel vibrates to varying degrees). Of course this requires appropriate software – I recommend trying it with Papyrus’ phenomenal ‘Grand Prix Legends, the Codemaster ...
