The Tiger Woods video game franchise has been around for a few years now, and has always been a very solid, enjoyable game (with the exception of '04, which was intelligence-insultingly easy). Whether you're into golf (and I really am not), it is still immensely enjoyable to land a chip shot on the green just right. The create-a-golfer has always been a thing of beauty too; something EA Sports have always managed to do well. While I'm aware that Tiger Woods 08 has just been released, I shan't be reviewing it because a) I don't own it and b) for reasons that will become clear at the end of this review.
LOOKS
Well, given the somewhat docile nature of golf, you would expect this game to look very good. It's not like they have to use up memory by animating car crashes and ninja flips. The graphics are...passable, I guess. They are by no means bad - as mentioned, the create-a-golfer mode is better than ever, and the texture mapping of the trees and grass has been given the once over. But to be honest, it's not what you'd call mind-blowing. What with this being the first Tiger Woods on PS3, I was expecting photo realism and intelligent, non-repetative commentary. But to be honest, it just feels like a very, very pretty PS2 title. Yes it's all very crisp, but it still feels as though all the scenery is painted onto polygons.
SOUNDS
It's still the same team of David Feherty and Gary McCord, and while their banter is witty, I didn't pick out anything radical new or different from the last Tiger Woods title I bought back in 2005. The golfers now shout after their shots, hoping that vocal telekinesis will somehow change the trajectory of the shot, which does add to the realism of it all. Elsewhere, the gentle tweeting of birds and the incessant, boorish shouts of the Americanised fans adds to it all in the same way it has with every other title. Oh, and as is the case with every EA Sports game ever, the music in the game sucks.
NEW FEATURES
To just sit down and play this game, it is pretty hard to tell what's new and what isn't. Aside from the visual tweaks, there have been some changes made to the game. You can now boost your stats via training exercises. Different training games will improve different aspects of your game, which will be necessary to take on the main challenge mode, which entails beating 4 minor golfers followed by a 5th "boss" (if you like), to move to the next level and enhance your skills and wallet size further. To be honest, the training games are arduous after a while, and stat limiters mean that you can only improve to a certain level before you have to compete against other golfers before the limiter is raised (and reading back over that, it confused even me. The stat limiter will mean you can only improve your golfer's power, for instance, to 65%. Completing challenges will raise the limiter to 70% and so on). Other new features include fewer courses than the other console versions of this, and a few renamed one on one challenges which all basically boil down to getting the ball in the hole in fewer strokes than your opponent. Every year they're given new names (this year it's "Elimination" and the Hitler-inspired "OneBall") but frankly, if you're not a fan of video game golf, these trendy names won't make you one.
GAMEPLAY
The Tiger Woods coup de gras. EA Sports have gotten extremely good at utilising the analogue sticks as the main controls for both movement and action (also appearing on the most recent addition of Fight Night, and it works brilliantly). You pull the left stick back to swing back, and push it forward to hit the ball, while your right stick aims for you. Various button presses will change the style of shot (chip or punch for example), but the basics of it are as simple and brilliant as ever. I love the principle it works on too - simple to do, but tricky to master. Full marks as ever for the gameplay.
VALUE
Here's were I get a little narked. See, the last Tiger Woods title I bought was back in 2005. I parted with £50 for this one, and there is no way on earth that there is £50 worth of new material in the game. Had it been my first Tiger Woods purchase then fair enough, but if you've owned a Tiger Woods title in the last 3 years or so, there is no way of justifying this kind of price.
And that brings me onto my biggest moan about this game. Do we really need a Tiger Woods game every year? The big names are always the same, the courses never change, so what is the point in doing a new game every year? With football it's understandable, what with new kits, constant movement of players and what have you, but to keep rehashing this game every year and expecting the discerning customer to pay £40 or £50 every time just smacks a little of rip off. Why not do a title every couple of years and make each one a lot more different and a lot better? Oh yeah, greed, that's why. If you've owned a Tiger Woods game since 04, don't bother with this. If you haven't, it's a good game.
Advantages: Great Tutorials for the Novice Disadvantages: Speed & Excitement? but then its always going to be golf!
I bought this game of ebay for £9 (bargain!) i would never have paid much more for a golf game. I am not a golfer, ive never played and it doesnt interest me. In fact i would go as far as to say Golf (In real life) is a great way to ruin a good walk! A few of my friends play but it just doesnt interest me. Im 26 and still think its an old mans game. I know, i know loads of young people play, dont message me telling me how great golf is, its just ... ...is a good game, because i (a non golfer) like it. It proves you dont have to be in to the real thing to play golf on the PS3 (or any console!) So the game:
I havent played a golf game for probably 10 years! and i do not play in real life, i do not know how to play or what all the golf-lingo means, so the best part for me is that its got a great tutorial, it tought me how to play golf and it did it in detail! - good start! Gameplay: Loads of shots ...

Advantages: True aim system adds a new level of challenge Disadvantages: Has nine fewer courses than the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions
...consoles and the Xbox 360, Tiger Woods makes his debut on the PlayStation 3. Anyone who has played the series on the PlayStation 2 will find that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 on the PS3 plays quite a bit different than what you're used to, though the game is virtually identical to the Xbox 360 version--which is a good thing. The create-a-character is better than ever, the courses look great, and an all-new aiming system makes the game more challenging ... ...ways to occupy yourself with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07. You can select from a number of different match and scoring modes, including stroke play, match play, skins, practice, stableford, alternate shot, best-ball, and four-ball. Battle golf is a twist on match play, where the goal is to win the most holes--as it always is in match play--but here you are able to remove a club from your opponent's bag after each hole you win. Needless to say, it's great ...

Advantages: More features brought back Disadvantages: Same old game
Exactly like all the other Tiger Woods games. But thats not a problem. Although this edition does feel the most refreshed in the series and is the best golf game around. EA have added some of the features back in which they took out for the 06 edition, but not all of them for some reason. Calender events are still missing, the shop is still lacking stock.
The main difference is out on the course. True Aiming Mechanic. instead of the small cross ... ...circle. And if you hit the ball well it will end up somwhere in this circle. Also as distance grows or you decide to play a safer shot the size of the circle will grow or decrease meaning more room for a bad shot if you play aggressively and less if you play conservatively.
In this edition however, play is much harder. You will not be getting holes in one each round or see a par as a bogey. And i think this is the biggest step forward from EA. This ...
