Review of "Titus Groan - Mervyn Peake"
This book starts with a wordy introduction to Gormanghast as the huge sprawling castle, that reads very easily. This is the problem in my eyes. Despite its density, it is a light book, one that is wordy without ever being marginally taxing. It is after reading half the novel and discovering that it has only chronicled twelve days, that the reader realizes that they have been told nothing of importance. It reeks of self-importance, but delivers nothing; I was left dissatisfied. The main reason I carried on reading was because I had seen the BBC production and knew what would happen. Usually I am against watching TV - film adaptations before I have read the book, but luckily it served to be the other way round, otherwise I would have done something I see as inexcusable - abandoning it before the end. Having said all of this, there are things to enjoy, such as the characters that are extremely original. I especially liked the Prunesquallors and may even consider reading Gormanghast for the characters, but only for a light holiday read.
