When I was a kid I used to love Tizer – if only because it was one of the only words I could think of which rhymed with my name. I thought there was nothing funnier than ‘Tizer for Eliza.’ (and my sense of humour hasn’t become a great deal more sophisticated, I still think ‘Tizer for Eliza’ sounds pretty funny.)

I will confess I had forgotten all about this beverage from my youth until the other day, when I was desperate for a drink at uni but I’d forgotten my purse. The loose change in my pockets totalled 37p, which was not even enough for a can of coke. In fact the only thing I could afford was a can of Tizer which was price marked on special offer at 29p. All those happy memories came flooding back and I was almost looking forward to trying it again. Sadly, although my sense of humour has never matured, it would seem my taste buds have…
Tizer had a massive re-vamp a few years back when it was plucked from obscurity and given a makeover to try and make it appeal to a ‘hip’ young audience (presumably because kids have no taste buds and will eat or drink anything). When I was a kid, Tizer was bright orange and really syrupy and its advertising slogan was ‘You can tell its Tizer when your eyes are shut’ (I liked this a lot. As you can tell, I’m quite fond of little rhymes) Now the advertising slogan is ‘Refresh Your Head’ and its supported by Ed the Head – a head that appears to be someone’s dad who has been lobotomised and is having fluid poured into his skull!! Maybe I’m just getting old…
The can I bought also contained a ‘free pop fact’, which was that Nicky from the Manic Street Preachers is a huge fan of Stone Cold Steve Austin from WWF Wrestling (you can’t say my ops are not educational.) You get the idea of the market this product is now aiming for – fans of wrestling and the Manics who want to lobotomise their dads, apparently.
Onto the important bit. What does it taste like? Nothing could really describe it. It’s no longer orange and syrupy, now its an alarming shade of red and quite watery. It does taste watered down, but maybe that’s because I remember ‘proper’ Tizer in the good old days. The description on the can is of no further assistance. They describe it as ‘mixed flavour soft drink.’ If Barrs don’t feel comfortable actually naming what the flavours in it are then I haven’t got a chance, but that’s part of the charm of drinks like Tizer, Vimto and Iru Bru, trying to work out what the hell they actually are! It is sort of fruity, but it’s more of an aftertaste than an actual flavour, not unpleasant but nothing to write home about either, if anything a bit too sweet and sickly for my tastes. It isn’t very fizzy, more ‘sparkling’ but it bloats you up a suprising amount. You have to serve chilled as the can suggests because if it gets warm it goes flat very quickly and tastes really horrible. Unlike most soft drinks where I can’t drink a full can I found Tizer went down easily and didn’t leave my teeth feeling furry when I’d finished.
I went on the website but instead of finding a nice gentle site aimed at the promotion of the product through facts and information I found a very scary site which I couldn’t actually work out how to navigate or what the point of was. It appeared to have been designed by someone who had drunk too much Tizer and was feeling a bit hyperactive (it’s packed with E Numbers and Very Bad Ingredients.) I wouldn’t recommend you go for a look unless you are of a very strong disposition!
One point on the can worth mentioning (apart from the fascinating pop fact of course!) is that this stuff stains. Due to the colour of it, it is a really difficult stain to get out too so be careful when opening it not to let any spray out.
Tizer is available from most shops and supermarkets in 330 ml cans, 500ml bottles and 2litre bottles. It is regularly on price marked special offer. I have also discovered that in my local chip shop you can get it in 750ml glass bottles, which you can return to claim a 20p deposit. This, I feel is a worthy blast from the past for Tizer.
In summing up, I don’t think I will be in a hurry to buy Tizer again (unless I find myself coppering up again of course.) It was nice to buy for nostalgia reasons but like so many other things its just not as good the second time around (Bucks Fizz were never as good when they re-launched with a new look, to cite a random example)
Maybe Barrs should look into launching a limited edition ‘old style’ Tizer for all of us old nostalgics. Old style go-faster stripe packaging, bright orange and gloopy and not a lobotomised head in sight…
(I can only apologise for the title, I just couldn't help myself!)
Advantages: Tastes good Disadvantages: Bit obscure
...YEARS. Tizer was re-launched by Barr around five or six years ago, with the "Refresh Your Head" campaign, and it's been available in a shop near you ever since.
LOGOS AND ADVERTISING:
----
The original Tizer logo I remember from the early 80s was of orange and red concentric rings, with the word Tizer in the middle in dark blue writing (correct me if I'm wrong gang, it was a hell of a long time ago). And there was a TV ad too, with a rather maddening ... ...now, which is obviously costing Barr a few bob, but it is guaranteed to get the product noticed by the youngsters it is targeted at. Anyway, it's nice to see a bright and loud can on the shelves, and it certainly sticks out from the crowd.
THE STUFF ITSELF:
----
Again, correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the "new" (i.e. the relaunched) Tizer red, while the "old" (ca.1982) stuff was more orange? I'm sure that's the case. The new Tizer tastes ...

...So, I have chosen another Barr drink for my second post BB opinion, and this time it is the less famous Tizer.
Tizer is like Irn Bru’s, slightly less dazzling, cousin. Where as Bru has been adopted as Scotland’s other National drink, Tizer has just sat alone, waiting for a saviour, or some miraculous re design, to save it.
That is one reason for Tizers fading to black, it’s design. The main focus on its can is of the head of a red man, with hair ... ...I just don’t know how Barr do it. Most companies just simply mix a few fruits together to get their latest drink. Not Barr, they refuse to settle for the simple, the normal, the downright rubbish that has been, and will be, made by the giants like coca Cola time and time again. They break the mould with not one of their drinks, but 2. Which other major drinks company can claim the same?
To be honest, however much I hate the tag line, it is very ...

Those of you who have watch CDUK will know the song and hence will understand the title of the opinion. I was looking at how many ops I have done on "junk foods" and I have to say I really do like this stuff don't I?
Enough of that, now to talk about Tizer. What a refreshing change from all the other soft drinks that are out there. You have your colas and your fruit drinks, but Tizer is just purely dfelicious! It is not too strong, and it is not ... ...nice sweet taste on your tongue after you have had some of it. It is very tasty and very gorgeous. As I stated before, it makes a change from all the other drinks which taste the same. I do think one can get addicted to this drink because it is so delicious, if you have too much of it you most certainly will want more and more.
The drink is very distinguishable - it is red. The 2litre bottle too is red and this allows you to distinguish Tizer from ...

Then after the war, the government decided that the drink was not actually brewed so Barr were forced to change the drink name to Irn Bru - the phonetic spelling.

Advantages: A great taste Disadvantages: Unhealthy
It's Phenomenal. As the bottle says, bru'd in Scotland to a secret recipe for over 100 years. Irn Bru is manufactured by Barr's who also make Tizer amongst other soft drinks. It is the third best selling soft drink in the UK, after Coca-Cola and Pepsi. This just shows how much the Scots love it, as it can be hard to find elsewhere. Current sales between coke and Irn Bru in Scotland are roughly even. It truly is a national treasure. The spelling is often confused as traditional brew, and sometimes you can find supermarket own brands that carry the spelling 'iron brew'.
The fizzy drink is coloured bright orange (only comparable in colour to lucozade) and tastes oh, so sweet and heavenly. The taste cannot be compared to anything else on this world. I find it utterly addictive and without getting carried away, it is truly the stuff that ...

called Robert set up his own soft drinks company in Glasgow and in 1959 these two companies merged.
THE BRANDS
Barr's two biggest selling brands are Irn Bru and Tizer but it has several other brands under its belt too.
Irn bru - This brand was launched back in 1901 and it is by far the biggest selling brand from the group. In Scotland this drink is in direct competition with both Coca Cola and Pepsi. In fact year after year the total sales of these three drinks are separated by less than 1%, this has led to constant speculation over the years that either Coca Cola or their arch enemies Pepsi will try and buy out A.G. Barr LTD.
Irn Bru is currently manufactured in five factories in Russia and is also produced under license in Canada and Australia.
Earlier this year saw the launch of Diet Irn Bru to satisfy customer demands.
