Ahhhhh, the smell of burning rubber, the scraping of door against door, the balletic grace of spinning around on the grass. I love touring cars. As a spectator sport its awesome. There’s little difference in speed of the cars, you can fall back 10 places in one corner, only to make up 4 the next corner. It makes a change to F1. And the same goes for TOCA2. The world is littered with F1 games, rally games etc… Only Codemasters tried something different with Toca 1 and now they’ve improved on it in TOCA 2. This sequel is basically the same as the original but it is still worth buying. The graphics are much improved and if you have a reasonably modern machine you can run it in 1280 with no problems or slowdowns. The sound isn’t much different but still good and the gameplay is improved. Races are now more difficult, there’s more options, the handling is better, especially if you have a steering wheel, and there are more tracks and many, many more options. They have the full championship, time attacks, a test track, single races and support cars. The support cars basically gives you another set of games, with single-seaters, TVRs, Jags, Fiestas etc… You can race championships in all of these, giving you one of the biggest racing games in history. The one thing that is kept is the semi-arcade quality. Codemasters have applied a simulation feel to the game, but include arcade style pieces, such as only getting access to certain tracks and having to unlock the others by getting a certain number of points per race. As far as I’m concerned this is a bit silly, I want to race a full championship where I can come last in races and still race the next circuit. A shame. The other problem is that you can only race a full length race by entering a cheat code. This should be available as default. Even though, with these few problems the game is great fun. Along with GP Legends and Monaco Grand Prix 2 this is a to p racing game, much better than arcade racers like Need 4 Speed. If you want circuit racing, and love bumper to bumper action get this, especially as it’s on budget now.
