In May I finished my final year in school and despite loving to read it was often considered 'uncool' or just 'wierd' so I often chose not to read for this reason, or due to the fact I had very... more

Advantages Advantages Inspiring, full of underlying themes

Disadvantages Disadvantages you'll want to read it again!

Harper Lee, the author of ‘To kill a mockingbird’ is the one hit wonder of the literacy world. This was the only book that she ever wrote and this fact alone will never fail to baffle me. This lady is obviously a fantastic writer as she has written one novel that has not only gone down in history as one of the best novels written about the Deep South but has been used in schools all over Britain and the U.S as an examined text. To kill a mockingbird won the Pulitzer Prize, two honorary degrees, has sold over 30,000,000 copies and various other literary and library awards. About Harper Lee ... more

Advantages Advantages A brilliant review of the monsters which live next door, discrimination eats your pie

Disadvantages Disadvantages The detailing ramblings and rabbling of Scout sometimes makes me cough *

Since having just recently finished the English GCSE exam a few days ago (I wonder what’ll it’ll feel like when I read this op again a few years time) and still a few more to endure, I had to hand back this book and just realised that I’ll have to, yes, write this fresh from my head. Stimulate the neurones, come on, stimulate them “To Kill A Mockingbird” is a novel based upon the underlying themes of prejudice, discrimination and the corruption of the exploiters exploiting, well, the exploited. The black figure is predominantly the subject of oppression, victimized by the social boundaries and ... more

Advantages Advantages It can teach you a lot

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

'To Kill A Mockingbird' is one of my favourite pieces of writing. Although I mainly refer to the novel format, its available as a play too which is where I’ve put this opinion and also as a film, I have enjoyed both the book and the film. The book was first published in 1960 and made into a film in 1962, staring Gregory Peck. In my opinion, it’s one of the few films that actually does the book justice. *~*Background to the book*~* Seventy years before the novel is set, was the Civil war. This involved an issue of slavery and eventually led to the abolishment of the slave trade ... more

Advantages Advantages A book that makes you think

Disadvantages Disadvantages I would love to read a sequel

As this is my first book review, I wanted to write about a book that I absolutely adore and have read many times. I first read this book 20 years ago and I like to read it again every couple of years – I find that it’s charm never seems to diminish and each time the quality of writing impresses itself on me. It’s a book, which seems to revolve around the main characters and their feelings and their actions, in other words a people book. So I have decided to write the bulk of the review in the discussion of these characters. ~~Cast of Major Characters~~ Scout (Jean Louise) ... more

Advantages Advantages a classic, plus a really good and moving book

Disadvantages Disadvantages moved me to anger!

Well this is the sort of book that everyone seems to end up reading at one port or other in their lives, whether through being forced at school or just for pleasure, so there probably isn't that much point reviewing it, but I enjoyed it so why not? =) To Kill A Mockingbird. Probably the only book I've ever seen where they had to hyphenate the title to fit it all on the cover. This is the story of a deep-south American town in the early-mid twentieth century, a place called Maycombe. This may have been based on the similarly-Alababam town of Monroeville, where the author, Harper Lee, grew up ... more
