We have had our TomTom 510 for several months, it was a treat to ourselves as we were constantly getting lost or turning
up one way streets when finding hotels or going to for days out. We paid about £280 punds for it then (as we had some
discount codes for PC World), you can now get them for about £260 before any discount.
The device which is quite small (but quite chunky compared to the new slimline models that TomTom are starting to
introduce) has a very sharp colour touch screen, a power button on the top left, and a dock connector and SD Card slot
underneath - the maps are supplied on an SD card.
In the box as well as the device itself and memory card there is the car dock (which has a locking sucker), a desk dock, a
desk (3 pin charger), a car charger (works off the cigarrette lighter) and a nice little protective case (which just holds
the device itself not the dock or charger.
The TomTom 510 is very feature rich but still really simple to use. After the initial switch on (which follows a few hours
charge) you need to set the time, date, whether you are going to use the device right or left handed and which voice you
want the instructions read in (there are a couple of standard make and female voices and you can download extra celebrity voices but these aren't cheap and to be honest don't sound much like the relevant celebrity either).
After that the TomTom is operational. There are many way to input a destination, post code and building number, enter a name of a city or town centre or input a motor way junction or even an attraction such as Alton Towers - with all inout being via the touch screen and any location can be added and saved as a favourite so that you don't have to go to the trouble of re-entering postcodes and such like.
There are also a wide range of options that can be applied to the route planning such as avoid motorways, avoid road tolls, use the shortest route, us the fastest route.
Once the route is planned a little overview map is displayed, tap the screen and you then get a 3d view of where you are currently, this updates in real time as you drive and is very accurate, showing bends in the road, other roads in the area (along with the road names / numbers) and points of interest such as petrol stations, hotels etc (these can be configured so other things such as churches, pubs, resturants and may more things can be shown). Also shown on the maps are static speed cameras and the speed limit of the road- very hand.
Also shown is the distance remaining until the next action has to be taken (i.e turn left), this is shown as a symbol plus the distance in miles and then yards (altough this can be configure to be kilometers and metres), the instructions is also read out with the speaker being amply loud and clear enough. Each direction is read a number of times, once a little while before and again just before you need to take the action, this can be a little annoying but does help stop you forgetting what was instructed. If you do make a mistake then the TomTom automatically recalculates the route, there are a few occassions where this results in 'Please turn around when possible' but this is only when the alternative would take you many miles out of your way.
The TomTom Go 510 has built in bluetooth which is a handy feature. Pairing up with your mobile is very quick and easy after which you have the option of downloading your whole contact list to the TomTom so that they are there to be used for making a call. Also many of the points of interest (Hotels, pubs, resturants etc) have a phone number stored against them so you can call them - very handy for booking a table or finding somewhere to stay.
All in all this is a great device which I highly recommend - it is dependable and well made, a real life saver at times, the only small gripe I have is that if it hasn't been used for a while and can take a long time to find the inital GPS signal.
Advantages: Touch Screen Quick correction Disadvantages: Mount can be unstable
The TomTom go 510
having used this now for about 9 months and my 2nd sat nav unit i have to say i am a massive tomtom fan. The item is easy to use the touch screen is responsive and so far has never got me lost.
The unit comes preloaded with full UK road maps and accepts a full postcode compared to some units which only allow a partial postcode.
although this unit is the entry level in the new Go range it is still packed full of features and can ... ...cost also can use the tomtom Plus services http://www.tomtom.com/plus/ these include traffic, weather, new voices etc etc

Advantages: Easy to use, clear and concise directions, also acts as a hands free kit Disadvantages: none
The TomTom GO 510 gives clear concise directions accompanied by a map marked with the route you are following which comes in handy for those mini roundabouts that don't register on the map.
Put in your destination by selecting a favourite (a place pre-defined by you), an address (can be done by postcode or street address) a town or a point of interest and TomTom will get you there. You can select which way you want to go (shortest, quickest, etc) ... ...go a different way mid-journey TomTom can do that for you too. If you need to go to several places in one journey you can use the itinary planner to do that.
This series of the TomTom GO lets you know what the speed limit is on some roads and lets you know when you are exceeding it. The widescreen makes the images displayed on the screen a lot clearer and sharper than they were on previous versions.
The bluetooth functionality which allows you ...

Advantages: Nice size screen. Disadvantages: Windscreen mount is weak.
I bought my TomTom510 in August 2006. The display is excellent and the instructions very clear. The things I like best are the way you can use your mobile phone straight through the unit using Bluetooth. It gives you complete handsfree operation using it's built in microphone and speaker. You can even download your mobiles phone book for on screen calling.
All instructions and maps for UK and main roads in Europe are clear and precise and have the advantage of selecting your destination by full address or post code, but beware they don't update maps for free and they also don't include places past Germany like Poland, although it is listed on there web site as included.
You get software for your p.c so you can add bits to the memory card e.g voices, speed cameras, low bridges, Fast food resturants e.t.c. It is worth searching ...

for the firmware (automatic download from TomTom via TomTom Home) it will triangulate the positions of the satellite even faster. Actually it will predict where they are via an algorithm. Very well thought indeed?
TRAFFIC UPDATES
On the Go510 there are two ways to get them.
1. Via the TMC module through the RDS FM network (the same as your radio station displays its name on your car stereo) and only works on major motor ways and also you will have few more wires on the dashboard.
2. If you feel flash and want to get rid of the wires and obviously have money to burn than you can pay for the TomTom plus service that connects via your phone (bluetooth) onto GPRS and download the real time updates. Well money for data transfer, money to TomTom Plus and essentially only a slightly better service than the TMC. Shoving money down the drain is ...

Have owned a TomTom 500 for the past 18 months or so, and have recently decided to upgrade to the 510. so, was it worth it?Well in my honest opinion, not really....here's why
The new bracket is much harder to attach to your windscreen, and removing the tomtom from the stand is now a two hand job.
The TomTom often partly detaches from the stand whilst driving, causing the tomtom to shut down as it loses power, because it thinks you ignition has been turned off. (however, this has since been solved by upgrading to version 6.011 through the tomtom website, by disabling this feature!!!)
On the flip side...........
the machine is wider, however this is due to the fantastic quality widescreen that has been provided. although still hard to see in bright light.
the bluetooth handsfree is better.
it says it has a better aerial. but ...
