I have had my 540 Live for 4 months now and it's certainly the best Satnav I have ever owned.
The maps ... well the maps provided by Tomtom are very clear/easy to follow and are updated 4 times a year. If using the map update service, these can be updated from £7.99 each time, compared to £49.99+ if purchased "off the shelf". Tomtom's 'IQ Routes' uses historical data to route you the most appropriate route for the time of day/day of the week that you are travelling, thus often saving time and fuel in the process. Maps sometimes are wrong or out of date very quickly and you are able to edit the map very easily. The changes can be shared with other users and others' changes can be shared with you.
Live Services ... For just £7.99 a month you can use many services including HD traffic updates, that use anonymous information from peoples mobiles to establish the traffic situation. This is VERY accurate and automatically routes you around traffic problems (when a faster route is available). With the subscription, you also get speed camera updates. Fixed camera's are updated each time you connect your device to your computer and mobile camera's are updated whilst you're on the move. The Live services also give up to date fuel prices, weather forecast and Google search.
Lastly, the Bluetooth system that's built in too! It's a good idea that allows you to 'go handsfree', but it is tempremental a lot of the time. Still a good alternative to having one of those things hanging from your ear for the whole car journey!
Overall a great Satnav (Tomtom's best) and highly recommended.
If you require European mapping in this great device just go for a Tomtom 740 Live or for US mapping as well, a 940 Live.
Advantages: HD Traffic is a fantastic feature for not getting caught out in traffic jams Disadvantages: There are some conflicts between the google search and tomtom map
...the tomtom map and it gets confused, that aside i am extremely satisfied. Other sources have told be there is a glitch in the mechanism in that the nightmode colours are not automatically activated, which they should be and have to be manually switched. I haven't come across this though. ...
