Advantages: voice guidance!, easy to use, portable, congestion charge aware Disadvantages: only navigates via roads, so no going thru parks., maps are about a year out of date, cost of aditional maps
...the spec: I am running Tomtom 3 on an Ipaq 36xx series with a dual CF slot jacket with a Pretec GPS card and and a 256MB CF card. This was the hardware I was using from navigator 2.
I bought this
a) portability - i can use it in the different cars I have
b) updated maps - maps are only a year old(ish)
c) cheap - cheaper than a in car dashboard version (esp the mercedes one at £1800!!)
I had Tomtom ... ...
I prefered the tomtom city maps way of finding out where a place was where you typed in the postcode, and it found it for you, but it's still stuck to the same method (city, road name, house #). It would have been nice to have that option.
I would restore to navigator 2, but I can't be arsed, and the congestion charge is handy is suppose.
Finally, would I recommend it? Well if you drive in London a lot, and need ... more

I had Tomtom nav. 2 on my ipaq and decided to upgrade to navigator 3. First thing to note is that it *will lose* your stored addresses/fav locations! so be warned!
Unfortunately, it was not as updated as I thought it was, which was a shame... central london streets are not quite all there, since everything was been changing a lot to one way systems, this should have been double checked or at least a update from the web been offered for up to date maps.
The program itself looks better, and the icons have all changed to a more windows xp pastel type style. This is all good until I also found it this seemed to be slower! much slower than navigator 2!
Running the traffic cam software in the background (3rd party software which warns me of speed cameras), seemed to slow my poor old ipaq down to a crawl and seemed to effect the GPS tracking, to the effect that it would lose track of where I was! not good!

Finally, would I recommend it? Well if you drive in London a lot, and need to know about the congestion charge, get it, otherwise I personally wouldn't bother. Also I am too used to using it now, I really dont have to think about where I am going when I drive, this does it for me, onsequently I feel really lost without it, even tho I should know where I am in Wimbledon!
But being the generous person I am I will more than likely get my sister something similar when she graduates med school and buys a new car, cos it's so god damn useful!
Roads dont change that much in 2 years, and I pesonally would have been happy to stick with Navigator 2 and just get updated maps for Britain, but instead they have to program a new GUI and slow everything down. It seems as tho navigator 3 is becoming like windows... big bloatware!
Advantages: nice 3D view giving a good rendering of the route ahead, large third party support. Disadvantages: No way to update maps, Points of interest management limitations
My first experience of Sat Nav was with Tom Tom 2, by which time the software was pretty much established. Version 3 brought a few enhancements and improvements so I decided it was time to upgrade my Ipaq 2200.
In use the software is simple, enter the destination address and off you go. A choice of voices is available, for those with a preference over the sort of person you allow to tell you what to do.
There are times when the address is unknown, ... ...way around this I have found is to use an online route finder and then set my destination to the closest point known to tom tom. The Map view is very helpful here, where you can see the entire map in 2d form, zooming in and out to find the precise location.
The Points of Interest (POI) system is very good, but maintenance of your locations does require you to transfer files to and from your PC. Tom Tom support third party POI databases and many ...

Advantages: Lots of programs that can be used to update poi's Disadvantages: sometimes hangs no way of personaly updateing maps
I have had my tomtom 3 bluetooth for about 1year now and is the perfect companion to my ipaq4150 i wouldnt be without it now.
Simple to use just turn it on and click the navigater program on your ipaq and it'll link up with the gps.
Plenty of good apps out there for addons to tomtom navigator like postcode finder and poi update with a net database so you can download new poi's and import them into navigator.
My overall verdict If you have a car ... ...both your ipaq and your tomtom unit is very handy as the battery life on the ipaq is poor for those long drives you'll soon be needing a charge.
The ease of switching maps on the navigator program is also very simple keep the maps on your sd card and you can swap over at any time. ...

...which will work alongisde the Tomtom software, Tomom is an array of maps, which run in 3d on your screen, the GPS places you on that map, showing you the direction your going, the speed your going, and what to do next, The package comes with various maps, new maps can be downloaded to update your system,
How much does it cost to run this? doesnt cost a thing, Tomtom is software running on the actual phone, no GPRS needed here (GPRS is the way your ... ...lot, you name it , Tomtom does it, you can add your locations in yoru favourites so at a click of a button it will start,
The commands are read out to you in voice, which is wicked, i love it, you can also choose your prefered language, so if you fancy a challenge, put it on french, lol,
