My partner already had a Tom Tom Go, but sometimes we both needed help. He travels all round the country and recently had to plan routes for a new car launch from many dealer locations in the South East, with a Tom Tom he was able to plan the routes to perfection, detailing mileage, junctions, even speed traps.
The Tom Tom One is very small and compact, and can even be used when walking, especially around large towns. A while ago, my exhaust fell off, I was wondering what the noise was, and when I looked underneath my car there was the problem - detached exhaust! While I sounded really good, it didn't really go with a Renault Megane, I sounded more like a jet taking off! Anyhow, there I was in Tesco's car park having not a clue where the nearest exhaust fitter was, so I put 'exhaust fitters' into my Tom Tom and it showed me a list of the nearest. The garage I found wasn't far away, and they did a really good job.
This 'find' facility is really useful. On another occasion I was stuck in a very long queue on the M25 with my young daughter and her friend, bound for Cheshire, we were all getting rather desperate for a toilet! So again, I put petrol stations into a search, was able to leave the motorway and drove straight to a petrol station at which we were very relieved! If I had not had the Tom Tom I could have left the motorway and driven for miles on spec, similarly, I was able to rejoin the motorway without losing any time.
The Tom Tom has a touch screen and is so easy to use; you can enter postcodes, house numbers, streets or just towns (where it will take you to the town centre). At night the screen can be dimmed but it is still as easy to read. It can also keep you awake although I would recommend stopping if you are really tired! I was driving back from Oulton Park in Cheshire to Kent, it was around 1:00 am and I was becomming a little jaded. I had been travelling the M20, in the dark, for some 19 miles, there were many vehicles travelling in the other direction, no doubt from Folkestone or Dover, but I was just punching away into the darkness. I wasn't really aware of my position, who needs a sat nav to drive in a straight line? Then suddenly I was snapped out of my reverie "Exit ahead" she said, very loudly. Goodness, that made me jump. Even though I then knew exactly where I was, I kept the Tom Tom on so I would have someone to talk to!
This particular model also has French maps, very useful to find duty free shops and hyper markets. Also you can download maps for virtually anywhere you need to drive, both in the UK and Europe. Ok, they do sometimes lead you up the garden path, or under low bridges, but with a bit of sense, and you can run through the route before you go, they are an absolute boon.
Just yesterday I thought I would see just exactly how accurate my speedo is. The car I was driving was involved in an accident and we had had it rebuilt. The mph on a sat nav is always very accurate and I found that my Polo was 1 mph out at 40 and 50 mph, and 2 mph out at 60 mph. My Mazda on the other hand is spot on right up to - well, right up to as fast as I have driven it!
My Mother reckons that if she'd had one of these, she wouldn't have got lost as much as she used to - I rather think she may have driven straight up a lamppost as she was never the best of drivers. But anyone with a bit of sense can use one of these, you do not have to take you eyes off the road, they can be positioned just below your line of sight - to the left or the right of the steering wheel, and with just a bit of time and concentration, it becomes second nature to glance at the screen when approaching a large junction, as it always tells you which lane to be in, and in which direction your next turn is.
There are many, many features that you can programme into the Tom Tom - speed traps, post boxes, petrol stations, points of interest, any type of shop - some wag friend of ours once programmed in brothels! You would be amazed at how often the alarm went off to indicate one or more houses of ill-repute!! The Tom Tom even guided us to Fred Dibnah's grave in Bolton.
You must remember that sometimes the postcode given for say a theme park or race circuit is actually the postcode of the offices of that facility, not necessarily the car park entrance, but again, with a bit of commonsense, when you near your destination, there are invariably road signs to guide you direct to the entrance.
Go on - get one - they're great fun and you will wonder what you ever did without one!

On buying my Tomtom one i was very excited and also a little disapointed with the size of the box, i purchased a TomTom one v4 europe with traffic updates.
The set up was very simple no CD to mess about with and put in my "Man Draw" never to be seen again all the software for your pc is on the unit itself just plug the usb lead in and away you go.
The new easy mount part is truly rubbish you click the unit into it and unless you get this right ... ...and that i should ring TomTom i did this and was told by proberly the worst customer service assistant in the word that there is nothing they can do as this is physical damage bbut they would sell me a reconditioned unit for £20 morethan i brought the original one for.
Sorry TomTom its back to a map for me and i have a £150 paper weight now ...

I recently tried to use this Sat Nav system whilst on holiday in the Algarve, Portugal. NOT ONCE did it find us where we wanted to go. Problems we had:
1. Most roads, even the main road between PT and spain where marked as unknown.
2. often drove us to the middle of a construction site and said there was a beach there.
3. continuously fell off the windscreen
4. Sometimes lost satellite signal at the most critical time for up to 10 minutes.
However, ... ...in the UK, this system works better but it is certainly a TERRIBLE system to use in Iberia.
There were a few good things to point out:
1. Easy to set up
2. Easy to use.
However, this only brings it up to a poor rating simply because it couldn't perform its basic function of finding us directions.
In conclusion, DON'T BUY this Sat Nav for Iberia. ...

I have owned my Tom Tom for nearly two years now, and use it most days for work. The system is really easy to use thanks to a touch screen menu system, using symbols as well as descriptions for the main menu options, and it is really easy to program and set up with your own details. For the most part, the mapping is accurate and gets you to where you want to be, but as with all sat nav's a degree of common sense is required, and you should never ... ...been dissapointed with recently was the performance of the system in Cornwall. No matter how you program it the Tom Tom will always lead you down narrow country lanes rather than the safer A or B roads, and very annoingly it was convinced that we were in the middle of a field when on some parts of the A30, despite updating the maps on a regular basis. I have also dowloaded the speed camera function, and this is a very worthwhile upgrade, but doesnt ...

...The TomTomONE XL Europe is one of the easiest car navigation devices to use. It is mostly self explainatry but if you are unsure how to use it, the manual is very specific and very easy to understand. In my opinion the actual software that is installed on it is excellent. When driving, it is easy to follow all of the instruction that are being said by the automated voice. The one concern with this product is the very short battery life and sometimes, when it has been previously been connected to the computer to install updates, the system gets stuck and freezes. It has to be reset for it to function properly again and then it takes up to ten minutes!! There are many options that you can choose when planning your route so you drive the route that is most suitable for you. Other than the one disadvantage, it is a very good car navigation...

...The TomTomONE XL Europe is, in my opinion, a very good way of getting around. For someone who has a terrible sense of direction and a distinct inability to read maps and road signs this is an essential. I found it easy to use, with straightforward menu's and instructions and clear audio to ensure I wasn't distracted from the road. Always a bonus!!! It looks good, isn't intrusive on your screen and gets you to your destination safely. I didn't think the battery life was brilliant but if you have your charger and no need for using your cigarette lighter you don't need to worry about this. In my opinion value for money is excellent, anything that can save me getting lost and wasting a lot of money in petrol is worth the cost....

...I Recently replace my Garmin Street pilot unit with a TOMTOM V3 Europe (Traffic edition). I mainly did this because I wanted a low cost traffic solution, and I was able to get this from Halfords for under £170.00 (at the time of purchase) It came complete with the TMC receiver module.
Another reason for choosing TomTom was how disappointed I was with my Garmin, and how much better my Wife's TomTomone original was compared to it.
The unit is small and light, and the TMC receiver stays in my car fixed on with suction pads. It has a touch screen, and the menu icons are quite large. However I have thick fingers and I find that the touch pad keyboard screen used for Post codes/addresses is too small and I often get letters/numbers that I havent touched.
