I have been using the Tom Tom One for over 12 months now, so do consider myself an expert on this particular piece of kit!
Why did I buy it in the first place - that bit is easy, I travel a lot in a new job and to towns I would have never heard of before - on top of that I had some fantastic inside information that I will share with you.
A friend of mine is in the car lease business - everything from Ford to Ferrari! Obviously most of the high end vehicles have built in sat nav. As he delivers cars to their owners all over the country he has used them all, so he is the real expert. Guess what - he always carries his Tom Tom One with him He has become so frustrated with other systems unuserfriendliness (if that is a word) that he sticks with what he considers to be the best - the Tom Tom One.
His advice - unless you need the fancy features of the other models - leave them alone and buy this basic. Most of the upgrades of the high end models are available on down load anyway!
What is so good about it?
1) It is relatively slim for a sat nav, so it will fit into a jacket pocket.
2) It is sooo easy to use that even a techophobe will find it a doddle with it's simple displays and touch screen.
3) It cuts out all the fancy bits that you don't need.
4) You can update it quickly and easily through your PC.
5) The display has a 3D facility that is incredibly simple to follow - far better than any version I have seen on friends sat navs. when they see Tom Tom they know they have made the wrong choice!
6) You can programme different ways of reaching your destination i.e. avoid motorways, road blocks etc, etc.
7) At the touch of the screen you can find your closest petrol station, hotel, shopping centre etc. etc.
8) I guarantee it will save you time on the road.
9) It gives you an estimated arrival time.
10) You can enter an address or a post code as a destination.
11) If you have blue tooth you can link your phone to it
12) You can subscribe to additional features such as speed cameras etc. i cannot comment on these as I haven't bothered. the basics are more than enough for me.
13) I just have UK mapping, but you can purchase additional maps from around the world to load into it - these are not cheap though.
14) I heard on the radio this morning that it has £30 off in the high street stores for Easter - there is no better time to buy!
What are the down sides
There are not many but there are some.
1) People nick them - seriously - all the time. I remove mine from the car but at first had my window smashed twice. How does the thief know? Simple - they see the suction mark on your windscreen. I now keep a cloth in the car to rub it off. That is the best tip that I can give you - trust me on that!
2) The suction bracket can be a bit annoying sometimes. It is either murder to get off when you want to remove it or it falls off of its own accord.
3) Some mornings it takes a while to pick up the satellite signal. Occassionally I have to reset the whole unit!
Overall
I would recommend this product to anybody - whether for business or pleasure. Never again will you have to try and read a map whilst driving along or be bickered at by the back seat map reader. Buy one today!
Nice review - good useful info in there. I'm looking for summat like this to use this summer when we clog up the roads in our caravan - you've given me some things to think about. Ta P
