Hi. I love traveling, skiing, music. Got my dream job selling Hi-Fi a while ago. It was hard work - just fetching & carrying for no reward. Back at an electronics bench now. If I could just find a job combining those first 3 things....

I bought my TomTom for a ski trip in Vermont, so I have the US and Canada maps loaded.
When I got the unit, I followed the instructions (rare for me!) and loaded the included software ("TomTom Home") on my computer. This was a simple procedure and worked without hitch. I then connected the Tomtom with its included USB cable (which usefully charges the battery from the computer) and the software suggested that I take a backup of the TomTom memory. So I followed the instructions and did it. It takes about half an hour - be warned - but seemed to work OK.
Then I went to the online TomTom support site and it suggested an upgrade of the "TomTom Home" computer software. I did that too. I would suggest that any new users just go to the website and get the latest software from there rather than installing from CD then having to upgrade - its much quicker that way.
So what about the unit? Its small and light with a nice clear wide-screen display. The included suction-cup mount works just fine on the windscreen. The cigar lighter carger keeps the battery topped up nicely in use, too.
I found that configuring the unit to display the speed/direction/distance to next junction etc. information as a vertical column on the right of the screen gave a large, square area for the actual map to be displayed on. The touch screen interface is superb. The icon driven menu system is a breeze and the depth of included information is just astounding. (At one point we were driving through a ski hill car park and the unit actually gave us a map of the tracks through the carpark. I was amazed as I had expected to only see public roads, not private areas too!).
How good is at dirrections? In a word, Excellent! But I would temper that with one bad experience. It sent us to a ski hill via a road that is closed in winter! A bit of a let down, but the only bad experience in 2,300KM of driving over 10 days.
So, a wholehearted recommendation. Its a great driving aid. I think it improves safety too, because there really is no need to be making sudden dirrection changes when you spot a sign at the last second! TomTom gives you clear and consise dirrections before and during route deviations. I love it!!

I travel all over Northern UK & Ireland & my Tom Tom One XL is fantastic except the maps are out dated, two places I visit regularly were built in 2005 & still not recognised by Tom Tom despite updates!! Many other places have changed (junction to roundabout) & still not recognised.
