Advantages: Rugged construction, touch screen operation Disadvantages: More expensive than car-only uniys, but worth it
...have' accessories for motorists, the TOMTOM rider is one of the best on offer to the biker.
I'd like to think my sense of direction was better than average, I tend not to travel very far from my accustomed routes and as I'm pretty conscientious about sticking to speed limits, I wouldn't necessarily fit the marketing profile for 'early adoption' of 'satnav' technology.
Around eighteen months ago I acquired a BMW bike - 1100ccs of sheer extravagance ... ...protective gloves either.
The TOMTOM Rider takes a different approach.
Instead of a jumble of wires and an internal speaker, the unit Out goes the fiddly buttons, the internal speaker or jumble of wires.
In goes a water resistant case, touch screen, internal batteries and a wireless link to a headset (which saves you from being linked to your machine by an umbilical cable).
The standard TOMTOM RIDER package includes the base unit itself, a CD, ...

Advantages: Quick satellite lock, can be using for cycling and walking, updates quickly. Disadvantages: If not attached to bike battery for charging, then the TomTom Rider only lasts 5 hours.
I've only had my TomTom Rider for a month now, and have yet to take it out for use on my motorcycle (due the electrical system and alternator being completely trashed). I have, however, taken it out with me on walks. The great thing is that it has the options for walking, cycling, etc routes when you select a destination. What I did was point to a location near the sea, that was about 20 miles away. Apparently, looking at the map on the GPS, it was ... ...reach my destination on the TomTom Rider. The cool thing about the TomTom Rider is the touch screen. It's very sturdy, and you can literally smash your fingers right into it without doing any damage. Although trust me, you wouldn't want to do that because a gentle touch will go ...

Advantages: Clear, Built to last, easy to use, very professional Disadvantages: Poor battery life, lack of accessories
I brought my TomTom Rider about 3months ago, when I found that I was going to be on the road more and more with work. What a great investment! I've never used my old A-Z ever since. The screen is clear and can be adjusted to night mode for riding in the evening (although I still use the day mode at night, without difficulty). With the touch screen feature its easy to use, even at 70mph I was able to change my destination. It also gives your bike ... ...to setup). Also there is an issue with the accessories, I would have liked it if TomTom had released a boom style microphone with the actual device rather than me having to go and buy one from another retailer. But using a 2.5mm jack it wasn't too hard! Overall, GREAT!!! ...
