I would definitely recommend these spoons. I tried my son with finger food the other day and he put it in his mouth without any trouble. I think that it was due to the practice he has had putting these ... ...I think that they were good value for money, although you can get other weaning spoons much cheaper (Tesco's own brand are around £2).
I love the fact that my son can hold onto them and help feed himself (despite all my complaints about the mess). I don't think that there is a weaning spoon that could prevent my son from covering himself in baby food, which is why I gave the full 5 star rating.
My son is a VERY messy eater. At least one meal a day, he gets so covered in food that he needs a bath and a change of clothes. He spends most of each meal time grabbing the spoon, waving it around and sending food flying or putting his hand around the head of the spoon and squishing the food between his fingers (and then wiping his hand on his clothes, chair and me). He has a whale of a time - I spend a lot of time cleaning up the mess.
Despite all of this, I feel that I must give these weaning spoons a good review.
I bought the pack of six blue and green spoons - three have a blue handle and green head; three have a green handle and blue head. They are also sold in a pink/purple combination. They cost £2.96 at Tesco.
They are quite long, which makes it easy to get food out of jars. Their length also helps when my son reaches out to grab the spoon. There is plenty of room for both of our hands to hold onto the spoon. My son doesn't always take advantage of this and likes to hold the head of the spoon sometimes - probably just for the look on my face when he does so.
The spoon is an unusual shape - it dips in the middle of the handle, so that where you hold the spoon is higher than where the baby grabs hold of the spoon. I think that this makes it very comfortable for both of us. I have noticed that I tend to spoon the food into him from an angle slightly above his mouth, whereas, when my son forces the spoon into his mouth, he is doing so from below his mouth. The differing heights of the handle mean that we are both holding the spoon at the correct angle.
The head of the spoon is very shallow, which allows my son to easily take the food from it, without leaving much on the spoon. It is very soft, which makes it much easier on tender gums (I have just noticed his first tooth coming through!). The size of the head is just right to hold a small amount of food - too much and my son spits it right out.
The spoons are dishwasher and microwave safe. They are also suitable for all forms of sterilisation. The Tommee Tippee website claims that they have a "special stay clean feature". I have no idea what that means, but I have noticed that after less than 2 months of use, they are already discoloured.
I would definitely recommend these spoons. I tried my son with finger food the other day and he put it in his mouth without any trouble. I think that it was due to the practice he has had putting these spoons in his mouth. At only 50p a spoon I think that they were good value for money, although you can get other weaning spoons much cheaper (Tesco's own brand are around £2).
