Starting a child on food is always a bit scarey. What do you give them? When are they ready for bits? Jars or homemade food? oh dear I could go on with all the questions! I went out to Asda a few months ago to stock up on the gear I would need for my youngest as he was beginning to start his food journey.

I chose to visit Asda as they were having one of their Baby Events and lots of products were reduced. I got many things from them like cups and spoons. One pack of spoons were these Tommee Tippee heat sensing spoons. To be honest I didn't realize they were the heat sensing ones until I got home and actually read the package. The reason I bought them was because the pack of 6 had been priced at £2 and my brain shouted BARGAIN!

I have to admit it sounds a good idea at first glance. I began washing the spoons to put them away and of course I used hot water and made each spoon go from red to yellow. Not sure why but my simple mind found that a fun activity!

Putting these spoons to use I found that the idea isn't as useful as the company may have thought. It will work a treat if you are completely stupid and put your child's food straight from the microwave or hob onto the table without checking it but honestly if the spoon goes yellow it is not just warm but way too hot for you to even think of giving it to the baby. Personally I make most (credit crunch) of my son's food and warm it up by placing the container into a larger bowl of warm water. So as you can tell it never gets even close to warm enough to change the spoon colour.

The spoons themselves come in a few different colours. The ones I have are red with a pink handle. They are easy grip and the end is rather soft on the tip which is great for children who nibble on the spoon as they don't damage so easily. Plus the soft tip is gentle on tender gums.

I have seen these for sale at a few stores such as Babies R Us (£4.49), Kiddicare.com (£4.29) and from various shops on eBay. The best price I've ever found was that deal at Asda.

The spoons are easy to clean and are an easy size to throw into a baby lunch box to take out with you. The pack says they are safe to place in the bottle sterilizer. I haven't put that to the test but I am sure they would be fine.

This product says it is safe for use from 4 months onwards. Sounds about right to me but as I have learnt ... never let a 4 month old play with the spoon on his own ... they don't know when to stop putting it into their mouths!

Apparently Tommee Tippee also makes a heat sensing cup and bowl but I am yet to find them in the stores.

Not sure about the star rating as they are brilliant spoons and got them at a good price but I don't really rate the heat sensing bit ...

Is it too hot to handle
Review of Tommee Tippee Heat Sensor Weaning Spoons by SleepyDormouse

Advantages: Will warn if food is very hot
Disadvantages: not very easy to hold

...firmer plastic, it has the tommee tippee logo on the underside. The spoon itself is shallow and roughly teaspoon sized, and the handle is long (at least twice the length of your standard teaspoon). The handle is also very curved, which I personally find makes it harder to grip. I don't think the handle would be at all easy for a young baby to hold, but then it isn't intended for baby. Function --------- Well apart from the funtion of delivering ...
...the curved handle) this spoon is also supposed to act as a warning if food is too hot. Acording to the packet the spoon will turn bright yellow if the food is too hot and remain red if its the right temperature. What my experience tells me is that if the food is very hot the whole of the heat sensitive part does turn yellow, right the way up the handle. However the tip of the spoon also goes yellow when food is warm. It doesn't say anything about ... Read review

Yellow its hot red its not
Review of Tommee Tippee Heat Sensor Weaning Spoons by flossy

Advantages: piece of mind
Disadvantages: the spoons do become less heat sensitive with time.

...spoon made by the reliable Tommee Tippee. Im sure that every parent has worried whether the food is too hot for your little cherub. The idea is that the spoon actually changes colour to let you know how hot the food actually is. If the spoon stays red or turns orange the food is fine. If it turns yellow then it is too hot and will burn your baby. Its as simple as that. The actual spoons themselves are very soft on your babies mouth and are a nice ... Read review

silly spoons
Review of Tommee Tippee Heat Sensor Weaning Spoons by lilpoos_mum

Advantages: soft tipped, easy to read
Disadvantages: shaped handle

I bought a pack of these weaning spoons from Lloyds chemist for about £4 for 3 of them. The spoons are a nice colour ie red and yellow and the bowl of the spoon turns yellow if the food is too hot.The colour sensor runs up about a third of the handle, therefore easy to see the colour changes. I could not get on with them because the whole handle from the bowl to the tip is curved, although this may be easier for the baby to feed itself. We didn't ...
...I had to hold the spoon at an awkward angle to fit into my baby's mouth. Also i found the bowl of the spoon rather small but maybe my baby has a big mouth! The brilliant aspect of this spoon is the fact that it does change colour if the food is too hot. The soft rubbery bowl of the spoon is a nice idea which means no harm will come to the baby's mouth unless it rams it down it's neck (supervision is advised at all times when your baby is feeding!) ... Pointless
Review of Tommee Tippee Heat Sensor Weaning Spoons by Ann-Marie_B

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Detect even the mildest warmth in food, uncomfortable on the gums

My husband and I bought a pack Tomme Tippee Heat Sensor Weaning Spoons when we began weaning our baby son. The idea behind these is that they change colour when food is hot and are to indicate when the food is safe to be given to your baby without the risk of scolding. This spoons come in a variety of colours, our pack contained red and green and blue and green spoons. In my opinion this product is absolutely pointless. The spoons are made using ...
...in fact warmth is detected. These spoons will therefore change colour whether your baby's food is piping hot or mildly warm and will only remain the same colour if the food is completely cold. In addition the end of the spoon is a little too concave meaning the top edges scrape along your baby's gums. This caused my son discomfort when feeding from them. I much prefer the flatter, more simpler weaning spoons that are available. The only use my ... Read review
