What do you want a satellite navigation system for ?
I used to ask myself that question, and at the time I could only reply - to find my way to places I'm unfamiliar with. Now, however, I would list a lot more - especially if you look at the additional functions provided by the TomTom GO700.
You can, for example: - Find the nearest cashpoint/petrol station/hotel/restaurant.... - Receive traffic updates and re-route accordingly - Be warned when approaching speed cameras
And to save additional expense, while keeping you road-legal, the TomTom GO700 even links to bluetooth mobile phones and allows handsfree calling.....in whatever car you choose to take it into (the GO700 is completely portable)
But what about the basic stuff ?
Take the GO700 from it's box, mount it on your winscreen with the practical suction cup mount, turn it on and you'll be using it immediately. Tap the touch sensitive screen once (or use the remote), then select 'Navigate to' and you can proceed to enter a destination via a number of options: - UK or Netherlands postcode - Address - By pointing at a spot on the map - By selecting one of the pre-programmed 'points of interest', e.g. the Eiffel Tower
The GO700 will then plan an appropriate route (if you want to get picky you can ask it to avoid motorways, take the shortest route or take the fastest route) and immediately start giving route advice both verbally and via a graphical display of the route. You can then set off and needn't touch the unit again until you arrive and switch it off. Quick and easy.
Pardon ? Didn't you hear that last direction ? A single tap of the screen will repeat it.
Miss your turn ? The GO700 immediately replans - either requesting that you make a U-turn, or more usually selecting an alternative turning.
Worried about traffic enroute ? A subscription service is available which will connect to TomTom via your mobile phone and download traffic updates - the GO700 can then ask whether you want to reroute, or automatically take you via the best route.
I've found this to be a great feature, as long as you appreciate that there is no substitute for local knowledge. Small local routes do not tend to have traffic information available and so may either be congested or offer a better/faster route to your destination. I use this feature to commute daily into London from the west, where I have a choice between the M40 or M4 - I now let the GO700 decide for me.
Having sung the praises of the great features present in the GO700 (I upgraded to a GO700 from a TomTom GO Classic after suggesting one to my father in law, his GO700 was an immediate success with him, and I decided that an upgrade was fully justified for me), some downsides:
- as noted already, the traffic service is not foolproof and is subscription only - the map data is at least 2 years old in some areas, meaning some new roads are omitted and others have changed traffic rules (e.g. now one-way). This is a relatively rare occurence though. - although a GO700 is MUCH cheaper than a factory fitted, fully installed satnav, it is still quite pricey. The bluetooth phone function makes up for this to some extent.
There are, however, a number of reasons why I am still recommending the TomTom GO to all and sundry: - the design and ease of use cant be beat - you can take it from car to car - you can update and customise many features via your PC - if you choose to use traffic, it will save a lot of frustration
Advantages: Ease of use, compact, rapid response Disadvantages: Very few so far.
...you to even backup your TomTom 700, USB lead, cigerette lighter charger lead, a charger for your home which comes with attachments for UK & euro use, remote control & holder.
So far I haven't had any drawbacks, I have heard some people have had their problems with the unit not turning on, but until something like that happens to me I will continue to think that this is the best bit of kit i've bought in ages... if not ever!.
If I were to force ...

Advantages: Ease of use Disadvantages: Needs to be kept up to date
I treated myself to a Tom Tom 700 for Christmas. I travel a lot on my own, some of it in France and trying to drive with an atlas in one hand isn't ideal. after a great deal of research I chose the 700.
Ok I haven't learnt all the bits on it yet, but it gets me to my destination. If you know the postcode, it will get you there, and you have the choice of shortest or fastest route. Addresses can be input fairly easily and you still get there.
The ... ...very helpful, especially on roundabouts, just to confirm you're taking the correct turning.
If, by chance, you make a mistake, it will soon calculate a new route.
When you get to a town you don't know it will find the city centre, or the nearest carpark, or garage and so on.
The only downside I've found so far, when driving to Derby I was told to exit the motorway, which I did, it then lost itself for a few minutes as the road was brand new and ...

Advantages: Gets you to your destination quickly and easily throughout Europe Disadvantages: Maps not always totally up to date, one way streets not always defined
I bought this product from the tax free area in Stansted on our way out to Girona. The product is well packaged and it comes with everything you need. The Tom Tom was really easy to use and I got it up and running in a matter of minutes. It does take a few minutes to find the satellite the first time you switch it on. It had excellent mapping in Spain and I was able to use both in the car and on foot to navigate to destinations easily and without ... ...but in the car you can get some screen glare from the sun but this can be resolved by getting an anti-glare protector. The windscreen mount is easy to place and it has never fallen off. Navigating in the UK has not been as good as in Europe. My street shows only 29 houses and there is about 90 houses and has been for year. It also has tried to take me down a few one way streets at times that have been that way for a few years. The USB cable wouldn't ...

Advantages: Easy to use, simple to set up, portable, smart looking, very good features Disadvantages: have to pay for all extra POI
Very good sat nav system which is very easy to use. Only takes 2 mins to set up and then all you have to do is attach to your wind screen. The remote which comes with it is really just a novelty as your probably never really going to use it. The screen size is big enough for you to see and know exactly where you are going. The mobile phone bluetooth is very good, as soon as your phone rings it pops up on the screen for you to accept/reject the call ... ...very clear. Only really downside is that if you leave it in your car the chances are it will get broken into. Also if the suction pad on the windscreen attachment leaves a mark thieves will break into your car to see if you have left it in your glove box but this is the case with all sat nav systems. ...

Advantages: Easy to use, intuitive ,great display Disadvantages: Price, problems with Motorola phones

Usage:
The TomTomGO700 takes quite some time to find location when you switch it on, especially in town surronded by tall building, but that is pretty mutch the only navigation problem I can see on the software.Positioning is always accurate, maps( if you keep up with the downloads) are up to date, and voice navigation aids are pertinent. It call you the turn you have to take around 100 meters before it happens , and then a second time exactly when you have to turn, and furthermore, it will tell you how far the next turn will be.The touch screen display is well visible even in very bright light, and the device has a "Nigh Mode" with soft colors that can be manually switched on , or automatically timed to go on at dawn. You can pick your destination is several ways(post code, street name/number etc etc ...

Advantages: No more maps! Easy to use, simple to follow, non-threatening... Disadvantages: You have to pay for some add-on services and check phone compatibility.
If you like going on journeys with one hand on the steering wheel and one furiously trying to turn to the correct page on a road map or you like regular arguments with family members about 'which way you should have gone' then this product is not for you! If however your sense of direction is as heightened as blindfolded chicken and the planning of routes is just an inconvenience then read on!
The TomTom700 is the best gadget I have purchased as it has a large touch screen display, is simple to use and most importantly of all, it has really taken the stress out of driving. At it's most basic, the TomTom700 will get you from A to B at the touch of a button and will give you clear (non-threatening) guidance at every step of your journey. I was half expecting the device to blow a fuse when I first attached it to the suckered arm ...

Advantages: Great size, simple to use, extensive European coverage Disadvantages: will have to havwe a think on the cons...hhmmm...
This is a fantastic product! I think it may even may be the best thing I have bought ever!
Anyway let get to the pros and cons?I am sure there are some!
TomTom700 is a neat bit of kit, that is so simple to use and the added bonus is that it has bluetooth technology! and great graphics, 3d-like...and comes with a remote control for ease of use
All you have to do is enter in the address details and your off, it calculates the route to your preferences such as taking the shortest and fastest route and if your in London avoid the Congestion Charge Zone! Very handy!.
If you need to go to Europe, no problem! as it is already programmed, or if you need to go further a field you can purchase the country maps, I have not taken it abroad yet but think I will try it out this summer. I love it!
Definitely recommended, even my brother got one ...

For maximum driver and passenger convenience the GO 700 comes with an ergonomically designed, easy to use remote control. It uses radio frequency so you won't need to point it.
