My son has reached the age now where he wants he has started to enjoy doing colouring. I find that if I use crayons he’s not quite old enough to work out that he needs to press down hard for them to draw, and if he uses felt tips that they go EVERYWHERE and I end up close to having a heart attack. I had never heard of the Aquadraw until I spotted my friends son playing with his and knew that this was a must have for Louis.
****Description****
The Aquadraw is made by Tomy. It is a large mat measuring 90cm x 90cm, with curved corners. The mat is very thin so fold up easily, it is plastic backed (100% EVA) and the top layer is a hardwearing material (65% polyester and 35% cotton). The edge of the mat shows the alphabet with a picture relating to each letter.
****What does it do?****
The Aquadraw is basically mess free colouring for toddlers and young children. The mat comes complete with two pens similar to felt tips that you unscrew and fill with water. When the water filled pens are used on the mat you can draw in a blue colour and after a few minutes the colour slowly fades to nothing.
Around the edge of the mat are the letters of the alphabet and also numbers 1 to 10. These letters and numbers are intended for the child to write over the top of as an introduction to writing.
Another way that you can use this mat other than with the pen is to wet your hands or feet (or anything) and make prints or find shapes to draw around. Again these will fade and disappear after a few minutes. This is great fun.
What I usually do with Louis is have a pen each and ask him to pick me a picture from around the edge of the mat for me to draw – this is good for learning the names of objects too. Then I ask him to colour them in.
****Does my son like this?****
The answer to this is definitely yes. When this was first bought for him he played with it practically all day, as soon as I packed it away he wanted it back out again. I have noticed as well that his colouring has greatly improved over the few months that he has been using this. Although like with most toys the novelty has worn off slightly now, this is still one of his favourite toys.
****Cleaning****
This is the only downside of the toy. You can only clean the mat by very gently dabbing a sponge so be very careful that you child has no sticky fingers to shoes on before using this as it most likely will mark.
****Cost and Age Range****
The Aquadraw is suitable from 18 months. You could use it with a slightly younger child as they can’t really come to any harm, but it would depend on their co-ordination and concentration skills. I would say that I child would be interested in this for a number of years, all the adults that come around our house and spot this also have great fun with it! The mat is on sale in most toyshops for around £16.99.
****Where can you buy it?**** I have just checked on the Argos website www.argos.co.uk and it is currently out of stock for home delivery but can be reserved for store pickup and is priced at £16.99 under number 354/3519.
It is on sale at Toys R Us www.toysrus.co.uk for £16.97 and is in stock.
****Positive Points****
Well the number one positive point has got to be the fact hat your little one can have fun colouring without making a mess. It is also great for co-ordination and is a brilliant introduction to basic writing and learning of the alphabet and numbers.
It folds up easily so stores away without taking up much spare – a huge bonus in out house.
****Negative Points****
The main downside to this mat is that you have to be very careful for it not to get stained which can be quite difficult with young children. Also when you are storing it try to fold it carefully as I have noticed on mine that the crease marks are started to go a blue colour.

Tomy Aquadraw Magic Mat that is simply Magic My daughter loves drawing and painting though especially with paint, mummy does not like the after job of cleaning down both home and child. ...the presents he received was Tomy Aqua draw which he is completely obsessed with and I must say out of all the toy’s and games he has and there are a few this is by far and away the most played with already. The real beauty of this is that it produces absolutely no mess at all and the pens are filled with water not ink. We bought it for him from Tesco at £19.99 and were very impressed ourselves.

Advantages: no mess Disadvantages: can get boring after a while
if not wet from the aqua pen.
Each set comes with one pen so it's a bit of a nightmare if this gets lost as these are not sold singularly as replacements.
The concept of these Aquadraw mini mats is really great as there is no chance what so ever of any mess being made from using these. The fact that drawing can be done with water is great if not a little tame.
The age range on this particular product is 18months plus. Jack maybe a little bit young for this sort of thing but I thought the sooner I get things like this he will be progressing at a faster rate than leaving it till he is able to do things like hold a crayon. He is able to hold the pen and make small squiggles on the mini mat.
One of Jack's friends who is a little older than him had these first and that is why I went out and bought them. His ...
Advantages: mess free, fun, kids actually like it Disadvantages: not cheap - shop around
Tomy produce Aquadraw sets in a range of different designs and with different additions to them. The basic premise for all the sets is the same - Aquadraw is a way for children to draw with water without making a mess.
What you get:
This particular set is the Rainbow set and it costs about £25, and was bought for a second birthday. It comes with a brightly coloured mat which shows through rainbow colours when water is applied to the white section. You can see from the photo that the images are designed to appeal visually to children and really do draw the eye.
There are also two pens, and 3 stampers which fit on to the end of the pens, a brush and a dipper for the brush. The two pens take water and have spongy ends - an "open" and "close" sign on the nib of the pen shows parents which way to twist. The brush is a small ...
