When babies get to a certain age they start to take more notice of the world around them, we've all noticed our little bundles as they start to watch and listen to the sights and sounds that we take for granted.

I often wondered what it is they see, and more importantly what they make of it.

It's also a fact that at some stage during those early months our babies develop fears, they cry when we leave the room, they cry when they see the face of a stranger. They need to be reasured constantly.

I found during those early months of my sons life his biggest fear seemed to be bedtime. Not bedtime itself of course but being left on his own. I'd settle him into his cot, making sure he was warm and comfortable, switch on the night light and start to walk out of the bedroom. At this point of course he would scream. So back I would go, he'd see me and stop crying. So I would wait for a few minutes until I thought he was asleep and try again. Again he would scream. This resulted in me either having to stay with him until he fell asleep or keeping him up until we went to bed.

Of course neither of these were very practical solutions so another option had to be found.

We'd had a Tomy Lullaby Light Show for our daughter when she was a baby and I remembered how she used to love to watch the pictures dancing round the room so we decide to buy another one for Brandon.

Priced at £12.79 in the catalogue it was one of the cheaper nightlights and although there were others to choose from I thought I'd stay with a product that I'd tried before and been happy with.

The light itself is a revolving night light with small colourful pictures of animals and small figures and shapes on it. These are projected onto the walls and ceiling of babys bedroom. As the light is a dome shape the pictures appear to be quite large so are easy for baby to see. As it revolves it plays the incredibly soothing Brahms Lullaby which will help to send the little one off to sleep without any trouble or so I hoped!

There is a small bulb inside the light and this is powerful enough to project good clear images.

The dome revolves quite slowly so that it's easy for even very young babies to focus on the images. The size and the colour of the pictures vary too which help to hold babys attention.

The music is played at a very low level so you can put the light close to babys bed without worrying about having to adjust any volume control.

As the light is a wind up rather then electric light it means you can place it anywhere without having to worry about tripping over wires. It needs three large batteries to work but they do last a long time so it doesn't cost a lot to run. The toy takes a minute or two to wind down and by this time baby should be asleep.

Another thing I like about it being so portable is that my son is still sleeping in our bedroom, so I put it on my bedside cabinet and if he wakes up during the night I can just switch it on and off to sleep he goes (me too).

So did it work? To be honest no, not for the first couple of nights. I'd wind it up and he'd stop crying but would start again if I tried to leave the room. I perservered though and within a week of me buying it he was quite happy for me to leave him whilst he watched the pretty animals flying around the bedroom.

This is a bright and colourful light that is suitable for use from birth. My son is almost 18 months old now and we still use it most nights so great value for money too.

If you want a soothing nightlight then I can't recommend this one highly enough.
