Making the decision what baby monitor to get when my son came along wasn’t an easy one as there are so many monitors to choose from.
In the end I choose the Tomy walkabout classics, mainly as they had so many features on them, for instance they were portable which is handy if you are in the garden and your little one is in bed and they were good value for money at £29.75 ( at argos)***** The instructions *****
The instructions are easy to follow, they tell you how to set up the baby unit selecting the right channel and the communication range the monitors have.***** Using the monitors from the main electricity supply *****
To get the best performance from your monitors Tomy recommend both units be used by the mains adaptors that comes with them. All you need to do is plug the adaptor into the back of the unit, switch on at the mains and when the red LED (Light emitting Diode) is illuminated then you know they are functioning correctly.
***** Selecting a channel *****You set both units to the same channel (which is A)
You can leave the units on channel A unless there is interference (for example from a neighbours monitors, don’t just change one of the units, both units must be changed.
You’ve no need to put the monitor under the baby’s nose, you can put it up to 10 feet away and it will still work perfectly.
Either using mains or batteries switch the units on and make sure the red light is lit.
***** Setting up the parent unit *****
This unit is the receiver and the baby cannot hear any sounds from this unit.Lights only- all you need to do is turn the sound control to mute (ideal when entertaining)
The light display is an arch of lights at the top of the parent unit, green to red, the green lights indicate that baby has just moved or made a small sound, the red lights indicate baby is crying or in distress.
***** Positioning *****
The parent unit is designed with an adjustable clip on the back; it can either be used to attach the unit to a belt, or turned upside down and used as stand.***** Communication Range *****
The walkabout classic monitors are designed to work within a 100 metres, but with an increase in distance between them the signal strength is decreased.***** Important *****
No other adaptors should be used to power your monitors.DO NOT – use as a substitute for proper parental supervision.
And don’t forget your monitor transmits over public airwaves and your conversation could be heard.

We’ve used our monitors now for 12 weeks and we are very happy with them, we can even hear him breathing.
My opinion of Tomy walkabout classic monitors is that they are an excellent way of listening out for baby whilst you have the freedom to walk about your house.
