Making the decision what baby monitor to get when my son came along wasn’t an easy one as there are so many monitors to choose from.

In the end I choose the Tomy walkabout classics, mainly as they had so many features on them, for instance they were portable which is handy if you are in the garden and your little one is in bed and they were good value for money at £29.75 ( at argos)

***** The instructions *****

The instructions are easy to follow, they tell you how to set up the baby unit selecting the right channel and the communication range the monitors have.

***** Using the monitors from the main electricity supply *****

To get the best performance from your monitors Tomy recommend both units be used by the mains adaptors that comes with them.

All you need to do is plug the adaptor into the back of the unit, switch on at the mains and when the red LED (Light emitting Diode) is illuminated then you know they are functioning correctly.

***** Selecting a channel *****

You set both units to the same channel (which is A)
You can leave the units on channel A unless there is interference (for example from a neighbours monitors, don’t just change one of the units, both units must be changed.

***** Setting up the baby unit *****

You’ve no need to put the monitor under the baby’s nose, you can put it up to 10 feet away and it will still work perfectly.
Either using mains or batteries switch the units on and make sure the red light is lit.

The units have been made with a wide base so they can be easily stood up.

***** Setting up the parent unit *****

This unit is the receiver and the baby cannot hear any sounds from this unit.
It is very similar to set up but has different options for monitoring the baby.
You can have ‘sound and light’ or just light.
To have sound and light turn on the light display by moving the button at the side of the unit to ‘on’ and make sure you can properly hear baby by turning up the volume by the rotary volume control on the side of the unit.

Lights only- all you need to do is turn the sound control to mute (ideal when entertaining)
The light display is an arch of lights at the top of the parent unit, green to red, the green lights indicate that baby has just moved or made a small sound, the red lights indicate baby is crying or in distress.

On the monitor there is a volume control switch to enable you to hear baby’s sounds at the level you wish, there is a minimum volume whis is pre set so you cannot turn the volume down to low.

***** Positioning *****

The parent unit is designed with an adjustable clip on the back; it can either be used to attach the unit to a belt, or turned upside down and used as stand.

***** Communication Range *****

The walkabout classic monitors are designed to work within a 100 metres, but with an increase in distance between them the signal strength is decreased.
The range from both units is greater if both units are powered from the mains supply.

***** Important *****

No other adaptors should be used to power your monitors.
Always make sure both units are on the same channel.
Make sure the unit or the adaptor is within reach of your baby.
Regularly check to make sure your monitor is working properly.

DO NOT – use as a substitute for proper parental supervision.
And don’t forget your monitor transmits over public airwaves and your conversation could be heard.

We’ve used our monitors now for 12 weeks and we are very happy with them, we can even hear him breathing.
My opinion of Tomy walkabout classic monitors is that they are an excellent way of listening out for baby whilst you have the freedom to walk about your house.
