Advantages well known brand; good products

Disadvantages inconsistent staff

Up until recently I was a regular customer of my local Toni & Guy going every 6-8 weeks for my cut and highlights.

Initially I was very happy with the results as I achieved the colour I wanted and my cut had more style to it than it had done for a long time. I have long curly hair and it has a tendency to look hippyish when loose so Toni & guy gave me more shape.

On each return my hair became more and more light blonde until it looked like a full colouring rather than highlights. This is due to more than length than your roots being coloured so with each visit the colour builds up in the mid-length. A common problem apparently. This resultant in my hair becoming straw like and because of the amount of colour my hair became even more high maintenance because the root regrowth was more obvious than ever. Also I noticed that in certain light conditions my hair had developed horizontal bands of colour –not what I had in mind at all. The same colour was always used on my hair but as the colour fades over time you can get a stripy effect – not the sunkissed look that I was trying to achieve! I’ve had my hair highlighted for the last 6 years and I’ve only had stripes in the last 18 months since I’ve been going to Toni & Guy. This isn’t a problem that I had with other salons.

Toni & Guy have a factory approach to hairdressing in that you get different people doing cut, wash and colouring. Your hairdresser may also be dealing with several clients at once. I just felt like I wasn’t being taken care of enough and the price was simiarl to salons where you get individual attention – somewhere in the region of £100 for highlights and cut. The hairdressers are nice enough – I just think they just try to do too many heads of hair in a day – who can blame them though with the amount of money they must be turning over?

Having said that – I can’t be the only customer they’ve lost!

Another problem is the inconsistency of the skill level of the staff. I always ask for a senior stylist to do my hair as I don't trust anyone else. However, there is much variation between one senior stylist and another.

Thankfully after a trip to a non-chain salon I’ve lost the stripes and regained the natural look – phew!

I wanted an appointment with my regular salon but couldnt get one so i went to tony and guy......Big mistake the salon wasn't welcoming, the hairdressers didnt smile or make me feel welcome. When they washed my hair the water was freezing, then hot. When my stylist blew-dried my hair she was really pulling it, there was lots of hair on the floor!!! Never again.!!!!!!

I wrote a lengthy response to this particular review, but as it exceeded the word limit for a response I've submitted it as a new review "Ex-Toni & Guy employee sets the record straight..." I hope EmmaJ and also anyone else who's had problems with highlights will read it, as it's more advice than review: It's some of the many things your colourist wishes you knew and I hope also serves as a balance to the reviews detailing bad experiences at Toni & Guy.
