A haircut is a haircut, no? Well, no, actually – caught you out there, didn’t I, huh? Last year, during troubled times was the first time I treated myself to going into Toni and Guy’s in the town centre of Hastings. I made an appointment and off I went. The reason I went there was because I was unloved. Ahhh. Nobody wanted to make me feel good about myself, so I was going to have to enhance my appearance so that I’d feel good about myself.
As I walked in I was greeted by a funky lady behind the counter, which itself was rather funky. Wouldn’t mind a shorter version as a coffee table, you know the sort. I told her my name and she asked me to take a seat. I had a look around, everything was spotless, more to the point, everything was hairless. There were people being served by other people, sat there in front of massive wooden-framed mirrors with shelves in the sides. Some of the customers were just discussing what they wanted with their stylist, others were chatting away as their hair was trimmed with precision, while others still were having their heads massaged with some potion or other.
Some guy came up to me and introduced himself, “hi, I’m Rowan” – that’s a bit forward, I thought
– “and I’ll be cutting your hair.” Ah, I see now. I was seated in front of one of those mirrors and he stood behind me yanking the gel from my head. I should probably only be using a pea-sized amount, but excess is good for you in moderation. Yeah. So he asked me, “what don’t you like about your hair at the moment?”
“It’s boring.” “Right…” He look at my head for a while and pulled around my hair, covering this and that and said, “would you like a drink?” “Er, black coffee, one sugar would be great, thanks.” “Okay, I’ll get that done for you.” And off he went. I looked around and could see people bustling around outside. It was closing time for most of the other shops in the centre, so people were just leaving. He came back and said, “right, what I thought we might do is to take it quite short around here [the sides] and here [the back] and leave a bit of length at the top here. Then you can spike it up and generally make it look all messed up and stuff.”
I liked the idea of that; never done that before. Of course, I live by it, now, but it seemed adventurous at the time. I was taken over to the sinks and had one of the loveliest hair care related experiences ever. It was tea tree and peppermint. Some attractive young lady massaged it in and it froze my head to the point that I couldn’t move my eyes. Total exaggeration, there, but it was bloody nice. So refreshing that I have actually, in the privacy of my own home, mixed Wash and Go with peppermint oil and achieved much the same effect, however I recommend children be supervised when attempting this for the first time.
My head felt like an ice block and I was taken back, across the rather expensive looking stone flooring to the chair where my coffee was waiting. I tasted; it was nice. Rowan snipped away and began to chat. I wasn’t really in the mood, but I said a few things, I work here, no I don’t go clubbing in Eastbourne or Brighton, and so on. I was a bit quiet, just relaxing, really. When he had finished, he put the bedhead stick on my hair and it obeyed my every instruction. The stuff was amazing! I told Rowan he could have my complimentary biscuit as I went to pay. I was very pleased with the result and not at all bothered about paying £24 for the pleasure. I came away feeling very confident.
The second time I went wasn’t so long ago. I had Rowan again, the coffee again and enjoyed it just as much. I was considerably more adventurous and had an asymmetrical design with a fairly pronounced mohican starting at the left side of my head and curving round to the back. That looked good as well. I had tramlines in the right hand side, to balance the mohican, it looked marvellous. I talked more, as well, very enjoyable, except I missed the tea tree and peppermint, but I knew their secret this time! They used something in my hair that smelled strongly of strawberries and made me quite hungry.
Lastly wasn’t so long ago. I had to have my hair tidied up for Tommy’s step sister’s wedding, so I went, chatted, explained it all as Tommy lurked outside, making faces at me. I told Rowan, “that’s my other half.” “Oh right. Just down here shopping is he?” “Well, we’ve got this wedding to go to today and he’s not got anything to wear…” We had a discussion about homophobes, weddings and stuff before establishing that I’d have a larger, more textured strip of hair going down the middle – I asked for no asymmetry this time – thinning of the top, whilst keeping the blond bits of the old, previously blue mohican from way back when. Again it was good and the shampoo was wheaty this time. I had coffee again. I looked respectable for the wedding and felt all satisfied that I’d been pampered and that I’d earned it.
It cost me £25 this time and yeah, it was worth it. The atmosphere is friendly and the design ideas were great and there was no problem with saying no to anything, suggesting anything or, if you’re like me, just sitting there and saying, “I really don’t know what I want.” The place itself looks very classy, the décor is functional, stylish and comfortable. I liked getting a letter saying, hey, we’d like to see you again in about six weeks and see what we can do for you. That was nice, but that’s how people keep their customers isn’t it? Well, it works for me!
