Despite being quite image-conscious, I'd never really gone to a professional hair salon before (apart from Saks for some layers) - instead choosing to stick to my local ones which has always done right by me.

However, after noticing how good the hair of two of my best friends - one male and one female - I asked them where they had their hair cut and styled and both replied 'Toni&Guy'.

Toni&Guy are a chain of hairdressers - very well-known throughout the UK. It's also unisex, with male and female stylists cutting the hair of male and female customers. They also have their own brand of hair products that are quite cheap and are readily available in Boots stores/supermarkets etc.

With such a good reputation and when my locks became too long and tired and basically in desperate need of a chop 6 months or so later (after a move from Telford where my friends were to Bristol/Bath), I decided to pick up the phone and try out Toni&Guy. I was aware that they would be quite a lot more expensive than my local salon back home and on getting through they managed to fit me in for a next day appointment with no hassle.

They also gave me a choice of stylists, ranging from the 'junior' one to the obviously more experienced one. Prices for a restyle depending on what level stylist you had ranged from £38 to £47.

Now, I chose the most expensive one, because when it comes to my hair, there's no room for error with me. I've had a few disasters in my time and I'm always careful when going for a relatively new and different style to make sure that it gets done properly, so I can avoid weeks or months of embarrassment. But I was quite pleased, as £47 was actually cheaper than I'd anticipated.

Bath actually has two Toni&Guys within a short walking distance of each other, which may be some indication of how popular the chain is - especially given that Bath is a relatively small city and the fact that the first of the two Toni&Guys I rang up couldn't fit me in that week.

***The Experience****

Walking into Toni&Guy, you are struck (or should be struck) by how clean and 'trendy' the place is. It's a very professional looking salon, with pictures of various models plastered on the walls with edgy looking haircuts. The stylists themselves were great advertisements for the salon - very trendy, model-esque cuts and very well-styled. The whole image of Toni&Guy is of a professional, trendy salon.

After arriving slightly late and apologising (delayed bus), I was greeted with a smile and pointed to the seats where I waited five minutes. My stylist, a girl slightly older than the rest of the younger ones there came over and sat me in front of a mirror, where I provided her with four pictures of a model ripped out from a magazine. All four pictures were from the same photo shoot and it was basically the same hair but from different angles. I explained what I wanted - a few inches chopped off and a soft, narrow fringe cut in with one or two layers round the front to really soften it - I don't like harsh haircuts.

Unfortunately, I couldn't have stressed that to a worse person. My stylist's personal haircut was of a very Egyptian/Cleopatra style - a harsh, wide, short fringe with the Egyptian eyeliner to match. However, I trusted her as the top stylist and it never crossed my mind that she might apply her own opinions on hair to my own, when it was obvious I wanted a completely different cut. She reassured that my pictures were easy and simply enough to copy.

I was sent downstairs for my hair to be washed. A nice boy washed my hair - and I'm not sure if they actually use their own hair products that you can buy in the shops, but I seriously doubt it. The sinks were comfortable enough, the shampoo smelt nice and I wasn't there for too long. The only problem was the fact that the sinks were at the bottom of a flight of steps and I had to move my legs awkwardly every time someone tried to squeeze past.
The boy who washed my hair had obviously been taught to make conversation with the customers and awkward, patchy conversation ensued. I'm quite shy and am more comfortable just sitting quiet, but I imagine for most people, a talkative hair-washer/stylist is quite nice.

Afterwards I was led back upstairs to my seat and the cutting began. There was music being played - some good songs as well, I enjoyed Faithless' Insomnia before it was cut short by a heavy-handed male receptionist who swapped it for Christmas songs grrrrr hehe.

I was offered a drink twice, which was nice, and there was a little list tapered to the side of the mirror of what was available. Tea, coffee, lattes, mochas, cappucinos, red wine, budweisers, juices, milk, water! Quite a selection. I did decline though.

Now, I'm usually quite nervous when I'm getting my hair cut and am always very tense. I'd like to think I know my hair pretty well and after a multiude of haircuts, I've come to recognise when something's gone wrong. Of course you have to allow for the styling afterwards - the drying, the straightning etc. However, I did not enjoy my experience even the more so as I felt strongly that she was getting it irreversibly wrong.
My fringe was cut in and instantly I felt it was too thick, too wide (it went nearly halfway round my head!) and too short (I had a disastrous short fringe when I was 12 and I'm still traumatised). It didn't look anything like the pictures.
Then she feathered my hair! I hate this more than anything. It makes hair look like a cheap copycat of Jennifer Aniston's 'Rachel' cut from the 90s. By now I was in dread for the finished product.

She dried it straight and I looked like an Egyptian. I was in absolute horror. It did not resemble the pictures I'd given her at all and I was close to tears. I don't like to be rude to anyone, so I got up and stumbled over to the counter where I asked whether I was entitled to a student discount, flashing my card at her. She said yes, and knocked it down to £30, which was much better.

***RESULT***

I walked out the salon in a daze. Previously I'd had very long, dark brown hair and always thought that was probably my only striking feature. I felt I'd been robbed of it, given an ugly fringe and I felt ugly and mediocre walking down the street. I went to the nearerst toilets, looked in the mirror and burst into tears, clawing at my short fringe trying to pull it down. You know that sense of dread in the pit of your stomach when you've got this incredibly horrible style on your head and there's nothing you can do about it? After a lot of messing about, I eventually pinned the fringe up and back and got the bus home, miserable.

An hour or so later I arrived home and by this time I'd forgotten just how bad it was, thinking 'oh, maybe it's not THAT bad'. Went to a mirror, took my fringe down and burst into tears again. I'm in the stages of finalising a modelling contract and this, I felt, was not good.
It seemed like there was nothing I could do but wait for it to grow. Unfortunately it resulted in me wearing my fringe up for a couple of weeks until it had grown sufficiently. Even now, just over a month later, I'm still struggling with it, trying to make it look good.

So, overall, I was very unhappy with what Toni&Guy had given me. Everything else about the experience was great - top marks - but the fact that the top stylist had appeared incapable of copying a very simple cut from a picture and had even appeared to have inspired my cut from her own is very unsatisfactory. My boyfriend said I should have refused to have paid.

***WOULD I GO THERE AGAIN?****

At first, the answer would have been a plain, definite no. But I like to be fair, and maybe it was just that particular stylist. I was not happy with my result at all, and would almost definitely would not go back for a restyle unless there was no real alternative and I could be sure I don't get that stylist again. But apart from the actual result, the salon itself is fine.

Basically, I wouldn't rule out going back there for maybe a colour or something. Their stylists are usually very good, I've seen lots of very professional, good-looking haircuts from them on people I know and the stylists' own hair styles could have been straight from magazines, even if my own particular stylists' wasn't to my taste. However, I won't recommend them, simply because of the result of my first experience of them.

But I think that for now, and for hair restyles at least, I'll stick to my 'local' one back in the Midlands.

I think their personally crap the only thing that holds them up is that they are popular and all the young girls flock there when something is spoken about in a magazine or something. My Toni And Guy in Lakeside is a shambles - you walk in and all the stylists have near enough the same haircut! Choppy with a blunt fringe! Dunno about you but I like to see originality i dont like to tink I'm going to be turnt into a clone!
