Topfield, Top Rank, Twin Tuners and TopUp TV Too

Advantages: Twin tuner flexibility. Good tech support with upgrades etc from toppy.org.uk forum
Disadvantages: A lot to learn, not helped by p***-poor manual

I'd owned a PVR before; the excellent Humax 8000PVRT, designed solely for Freeview digital terrestrial TV, but since buying it, two things happened.

a) I got fed ...
...of its own, was the Topfield 5800PVR. Not a common household brand, but, like Humax, a name well known in Satellite Set-Top box circles (just not SKY set-top box circles though).

==FIRST IMPRESSIONS== "It doesn't look very space age does it?", being built in a typical 70's style silver box with a black acrylic front panel? For the best part of 300 smackers at the time, I was expecting something a bit less 'generic' looking. ... more

Advantages: Twin tuner. Additional apps can be added.
Disadvantages: Initial startup takes a few seconds. Think this is with all PVR's Thou

know what you are thinking. Another PVR on the market and this seems even more expensive that the ones I have seen. Well put it this way I have read the reviews for some of the other PVR's on the market and done the same thing you are probably doing now. Now all I can say is this was my conclusion. Twin tuner (record 2 channels at once) with playback at the same time. Not all will offer this feature and the cheaper brands are more of a VCR than ...
...low signal area. Fanless very low noise. This is a huge advantage as the only thing you can hear is the Hard drive spinning. This is veery quite and you have to listen to be able to hear it. Some other brands have been reported to be alot louder. this is not something I can comment on as I have never tried another PVR but I am very pleased with it. Has the ability to take Top up cards. You are able to subscribe to pay tv channels. to my knowledge ...

Don't be afraid of TAPs

Advantages: great flexibility, thanks to add-ons, very active users community
Disadvantages: none so far

...particular "MyStuff" improve the "normal" Topfield interface software no end! One of the things that decided me is the vibrant and very active community of Topfield users who interact on the above site. This was made really clear when earlier this year there was a problem of crashing due to a signal transmitted via freeview. A Topfield problem, really, like many other PVR brand also experience from time to time. But instead of waiting for the company ...

The best it gets for a Freeview PVR so far

Advantages: Twin freeview tuner. Can be programmed
Disadvantages: as with most PVR's - need a separate PC to archive

Had this for about 14 months. It has performed flawlessly. Good sensitivity of the tuners even with poor aerial. Very good picture. Very easy to use but you have to read the manual as with most PVR's. Many add-ons available from a users web site included an improved EPG You need to be moderately computer literate to get best use of this but it is quite easy to download recorded files to a PC - and you really need to use a PC to get the best out ...
