Dates and shopping trips are rudely interrupted by aliens, weevils and unheard of creatures. Their gateway into this world is through cards from a new card game series MonstaQuest. People are starting to be picked off by someone unleashing the power behind these cards and the Torchwood team must put a stop to it before it's game over.
Although the concept of cards with monsters on them coming alive isn't unique (Yu-gi-oh etc) It's certainly an original take on how they're used and how they were made. You will need to have seen the Torchwood televison series to understand what is going on but the gist of it is there is a group of people in Cardiff who are called Torchwood, they deal with alien activity in Cardiff and try to keep it quiet from the public.
The writing form is in third person and the chapters are around 15+ pages long, the chapters also switch to different members of Torchwood in each new chapter.
I found this an enjoyable read and I was pleased the book managed to get the characters in-character with Ianto and Jack's flirting to Rhys and Gwen's relationship problems, I found this a refreshing change to my usual taste in books and I'll probably end up reading all of the other books. Fans of the series and sci-fi books will enjoy this story.
Captain Jack Harkness: (Played by John Barrowman) The leader of Torchwood and also one of the ninth Doctor's travelling companions in the Doctor Who series. He gets revived everytime he dies and he is currently dating Ianto.
Ianto Jones: (Gareth David-Lloyd) Torchwood's secretary (I think... he does the most work anyway) He looks after the alien equipment they find. Ianto is a bit of a cleaning addict.
Gwen Cooper: (Eve Myles) Gwen is Torchwood's newest member, originally a policewoman. Her relationship with fiance Rhys is pulled to the limits with all the late hours she has to do.
Owen Harper: (Burn Gorman) The team's surgeon, he does the autopsys on the dead aliens and humans connected to their work. Owen died sometime in the series but was brought back, he can't feel anything though and that certainly doesn't help when he's reaching for his gun and he doesn't know if he's holding it.
Toshiko Sato: (Naoki Mori) Torchwood's computer and hacker expert, if they need her to destroy CCTV it's as good as gone in a few minutes. She hates it if someone manages to beat her in her computer skills.

Shopping for wedding gifts is enjoyable, unless like Gwen you witness a Weevil massacre in the shopping center. A trip to the zoo is a great day out, until a date goes tragically wrong and Ianto is badly injured by stolen alien tech. And Halloween is a day of fun and frights, before unspeakable monsters invade the streets of Cardiff and it's no longer a trick or a treat for the terrified population. Torchwood can control small groups of scavengers, but now someone has given large numbers of predators a season ticket to Earth. Jack's investigation is hampered when he finds he's being investigated himself. Owen is convinced that it's just one guy who's toying with them. But will Torchwood find out before it's too late that the game is horribly real, and the deck is stacked against them?Featuring "Captain Jack Harkness" as played by John Barrowman, with Gwen Cooper, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato and Ianto Jones as played by Eve Myles, Burn Gorman, Naoki Mori and Gareth David-Lloyd, in the hit series created by Russell T. Davies for BBC Television.
