I have recently purchased the Toshiba D-VR16SB combo unit, and am initially very pleased with it.
It is a neat looking unit, and I found the initial connecting and set up relatively easy. The unit has an auto tune facility to find the terrestial TV channels, and scart connection for satellite, and facilities are there for s video or audio/video cables if required.
For DVD recording it has a choice of six modes, giving up toa max of 600 minutes on a 12cm DVD disc, down to the highest quality level of recording, giving 60 mins of very high quality.I have used the recorder on the standard setting, which gives 120 mins at a fairly good quality level. You can use DVD RW disc, which you can wipe and reuse, or normal discs which you finalise, and they can then be played on any DVD player.
If you wish to record onto Video tape, then the VCR operates much the same as any normal video recorder.
You are able to record from external sources, ie, satellite, or digital video camera whilst watching other channels, although if recording from satellite, you can only watch a terrestial channel.
Some cheap DVD recorders will only allow you to record whatever you are watching.
Nearly forgot to mention, it will copy, Video to DVD and DVD to Video if required.
It will play mp3 and jpeg discs, although this is something I have not yet tried. It can use both DVD's and CDVD. It has facilities for simultaneous recording and watching, with a delay they call Chase playback. Zoom facility, and disc editing facilities along with surround sound capabilities.
I am sure there are other features that I have yet to discover, but suffice to say that so far I am very impressed.
I paid £199 from a local independant retailer, so is probably available cheaper from the big boys.

Ah I could do with one of these. I have so many remotes and wires trailing everywhere. I don't want to part with my video because I still have hundreds of videos that I might want to watch sometime. The video won't fit on the stand though so I have to have a little table beside the tv just for the video to stand on. One of these would be ideal. x x
